He stood by himself in the office, hearing the air conditioning return. His heart pounded fast in his chest, his breath resisting the new found ablility of deep breaths.
His mind was racing. He thought of his encounter with Hellion. How short he had been...
How roughly he had coughed...He turned down to the USB, grabbed it, and ran out of the front doors.
*
He ran up the steps as quick as his feet would allow, colliding against the door. He rung the doorbell again and again and again; he knocked and banged again and again and again.
"---What the fuck do you want!?" She yelled as she swung open the door.
Aden stepped inside as soon as the door opened, forcing Miki to back up. He closed the door, locking it firmly.
Then his eyes returned to Miki, who had turned away to cough.
He stared at the curve of her back, at the red wild strands of hair, and at her dirty shoes. She wouldn't wear shoes at home.
She gathered her breath and returned to glaring at Aden. She searched his eyes with a frown.
"Why're you looking at me like that?" She said, sounding like her nose was pinched.
Aden stepped closer, holding something in his cupped hands.
"I....I wanted to..." Aden glanced up at her. "...return something."
He opened his hands, and there laid the USB.
Miki stared down at the USB. Her eyes were fixed to it, as if unwilling to look up at Aden's wide eyes.
Aden watched her lips go tight, her face lose color, and her eyes widen. She was trembling.
He couldn't believe it.
He dropped the USB and ran to Miki's room. She clutched his shoulder, and as soon as he slipped away she tackled him to the ground.
He grabbed her by the wrists and pushed her away. Stumbling up onto his feet, he left her on the ground.
"Aden!!" Her coarse voice yelled.
He burst into the room, skidding to a stop. It was black enough so that Aden couldn't see the walls. All that was visible were the six different monitors--each displaying different screens. Some were cameras, including the front porch of this very own house. Then there was other video systems of elegant rooms, bigger than the average house. In fact, six different rooms were being recorded that looked so extravagant that they didn't register in his mind.
Then there were monitors that just had multiple windows opened and stacked upon each other--each displaying different codes and patterns of numbers that made no sense.
Aden jumped away as her shadow appeared, and the edge of the baseball bat grazed by his head. He ducked away, running past Miki and into the living room.
He spun around, holding out his hands defensively, but as soon as Miki came swinging at him again, he bolted.
He ran out into the streets, sprinting down the sidewalk and looking back. Miki was sprinting right after him, the bat still over her shoulder. She was fast.
An idea sparked in Aden's mind.
He diverted his path towards alleyways and away from the public eye. He wedged between dumpsters and climbed over fences, all things that Miki handled with ease.
But at the first glimpse of people, sitting huddled together, Aden yelled.
"Hey!! Help!! An outsider--an outsider!!" He screamed, pointing back towards Miki.
