Being a young female and growing up in a society that has been presented to us in wrapping of Photoshop and a bow that sits atop it all that only identifies with body shaming, is something I wouldn't wish on anybody, but sadly that's the world we live in. We are given magazines and social media platforms filled with celebrities we are supposed to idolize. So we do. We try to do everything in our power to look and act like these role models. We try to physically become these people. But the problem is, none of it is real. The only thing pictures in magazines and on our computer screens are going to do for us is help us set unrealistic goals for our bodies based on the power of modern technology. After a bit of dabbling in unhealthy methods of achieving the body image that these afore mentioned 'role models' have, and failing, we realized that we can't. We will never have what we see in the magazines, but by the time we realize this and tried to fix the damage we have caused ourselves, we have already taken years off of our lives, we will always have to deal with what we've done. Whether your esophagus is permanently burned from the stomach acid mixed with food that retraced its steps almost every time you walked into the bathroom, the significant temperature difference you feel compared to everyone around you because you're just a sheet of thin skin covering brittle, malnourished bones, or the mental and emotional scars you have had to bear because people around you didn't understand what you were going through every time you looked in the mirror, you will always struggle. And no, this isn't just a female thing, it could happen to anyone. On that note, I'd like to say thank you society, you've done us well. Now, if you don't mind, I'm going to try to forget about you and go my own way. I can only hope the others will do the same.
