Derrick Lockshaw's POV
I saw the bus stop in front of the school, and I wanted to warn them. I wanted to yell at the top of my lungs and tell them to leave while they still had the chance. But yelling would do me no good. I was locked in the school's astronomy classroom in the electives and lab building. I couldn't open the window, and even if I could I wasn't sure they would be able to hear me.
I was on the third floor of the elective building, but that wasn't where I was when the school turned into a chaotic death trap.
I had been running late, and it seemed that the world was out to get me. But afterwards I realized the world might have been trying to save me.
My alarm clock didn't go off, so I was already running late. Then I spilled coffee on my shirt, and had to look for a new one. To top it all off, my car refused to start. So when I was finally able to get to school I was running a couple of hours late. I had called in before first period started to tell them I wouldn't be on time. But I didn't have a first or second period class, so I wasn't too worried about it.
But when I got to school I knew something was wrong. I parked my car in the usual parking spot, and walked into the building. My astronomy class was going to start in thirty minutes, and I wanted to get settled in before my students began to arrive. If I would have known what state I would find the school in, I wouldn't have bothered with lesson plans. I wouldn't have even come into work the next day. But what I found when I started walking towards the stairwell was something I never imagined I would find.
My shoulder bag, something I used to carry my books around, caught on the edge of the water fountain. I guess it followed with the unlucky events of the morning, and all my books fell out of the bag. It made a noise far louder than expected, and the sound bounced off the walls as it carried down the empty hallway. This annoyed me, but apparently it annoyed some other people as well. Several students walked out the open door of the nearest classroom.
The students at Blue River Academy weren't always normal. But something was definitely wrong with the group of teens that came out of that classroom. Their eyes were swollen and black. Blood dripped from their mouths, and they made hissing and moaning noises. I tried to talk to them, but that only seemed to aggravate them more. With their arms outstretched, they stumbled in my direction.
I didn't know what to do, but I knew I needed to get out of their. I backed into the stairwell and started taking the stairs two at a time. My legs were throbbing by the time I made it to the third floor, but I knew I couldn't stop. Their behavior didn't make sense. I turned around once I was at the top and looked down at the students stumbling up the steps in their attempts to reach me. Before they could come any closer, I turned around and bolted into my classroom.
I closed the door behind me and slowly slid to the floor. Hissing and moaning noises seeped into the room. The students had made it onto the floor, but they didn't seem to know where I was.
They had gone crazy. They looked sick, and they looked angry. I didn't know what to do, so I sat there. I stayed in that room until I saw the school bus pull into the parking lot. I stayed there until the students took off towards the gym, and I stayed there until the sun disappeared from the sky.
I stayed. I watched. I waited.
