My name is Rachel Calero, I am currently a senior at Herrin High School. When I was younger I struggled with an acute form of Dyslexia, and other learning difficulties, which caused me to have great difficulty in my studies, especially with reading aloud and writing. However, this did not quite my thirst for literature! So at a very young Age I thrived for English and just to sit and read. My dream is to be a writer whose novels offer a challenging and inspiring escape for other avid readers like myself. My passion thrived the second I learned to read in my own way. I knew just being able to create beautiful realities similar to those that fueled my passion was a talent that I wished I could pursue, but seemed unrealistic in the face of my struggle with Dyslexia. Literature taught me that if a push myself, stay focused, and work hard that I can overcome just about anything. I never thought I could be here, where I am today, an academically sound graduating senior. I just want to pursue my dream to help ensure that books don't become obsolete. I realize that my dreams may change in the challenging years ahead, but I know that my calling is to support the tradition and prestige of the written word. I have worked incredibly hard to get to this point and I know that I have a bright future ahead. Anything is possible if you have the dedication, heart, willingness to get out there and get to work.
I am the youngest of three children raised by a single mother. My mom has worked hard to provide for us all. The hard times have taught us how to work hard, to use our money for the important things in life, for things that matter and things that last. I also know that getting us all through college will be an even bigger challenge. Education is something that is important and will be with you always. My mom has often said that if she had not had her education she would not know how she could have provided for us all. This is why I am asking for assistance with my education.
