Really interesting story. Normally, I wouldn't recommend staying in an abusive relationship (no matter how minor or severe the abuse is) but I'm the type of person that believes that if someone really wants to get better and really wants to change, they can do so if they really try to. This story is proof of that. Now, I'm not saying that anyone in an abusive relationship should stay and try to 'fix' their partner, so don't think I'm sending out that message.
