His Steel Gaze

Chapter 4

My eyes began to open when I could feel my body swaying slightly in someones arms.Arms.... I jumped slightly jolting fully awake letting out a small gasp before looking at the person carrying me. "Hey Nani it's just me." Said a soft voice and I relaxed. "Eren.." I said just confirming it and he nodded. I didn't notice how dark it was until now, and how cold the breeze was. Myself only in a long sleeve shirt and pants I shivered and cuddled up in Eren's chest instantly feeling his warmth surround me. "Eren your like my own personal heater." I said laughing softly and he joined in. "Only you Nani" He said which made me smile and I felt at peace for a moment. The rest of the walk to the cabins was in comfortable silence and we stopped when we got to the girls cabin. "Goodnight Nani." Eren said and leaned in to gives me a kiss on the forehead. He leaned back and stared at me for a minute until he smiled and waved as he walked away. I sighed feeling my eyes heavy with exhaustion and I walked into the cabin spotting Mikasa sitting on a bed next to an empty one. She took one look at me and sighed. "You had me worried" She whispered making sure not to wake the other girls. "I'm sorry." I said extremely tired now and I walked over to the empty bed laying down and burrowing myself into the blankets. "G'night Mikasa." I said with a yawn and I heard her hum a 'night' before I drifted off into sleep again.

💠Time skip to morning💠

Sunlight shone through one of the windows in the cabin, making me open my eyes slightly,cringing at the brightness. Once my eyes adjusted to the light I slowly sat up, stretching the kinks out of my back and shoulders. I had slept like a rock I didn't even move from the position I fell asleep in. I looked around noticing everyone was still sleeping even Mikasa it must be early then. I quietly got up and tiptoed across the floor trying not to make any noise until I got to the door. Once I got there I twisted the door knob, pushing the door open. The hinges on the door groaned in protest so I quickly opened and shut the door making sure not to slam it as I walked outside. The crisp morning air hit me, instantly making me smile a little and I began walking towards the edge of the forest. As I approached the line of trees I decided to go into the woods instead of the blossom tree so I just walked aimlessly into the forest. As I walked I looked around at my surroundings, fully taking in all of the nature. I glanced up at the blue sky and it almost made me frown. It basically mocks us how it's sunny warm and beautiful when there's hell down here. I kinda just wish I could disappear into the clouds away from all the problems down here. I shook my head and dismissed my thoughts labeling them ridiculous and just starting humming no particular tune. I stopped in mid-step when I swore I heard something or someone. "Hello?" I said in a bored tone. I listened for a minute but continued walking after everything was silent again. I eventually reached a tree that stood out from the others. The base was at least two times thicker than any of the trees here and the branches spread far giving out a giant canopy of shade. I shuffled over to the tree and sat down leaning my back against the trunk. The bark of the tree didn't have the normal texture of bark which left me confused because the tree was smooth and....warm? I didn't really know anything about plants so I kinda just shrugged it off and leaned my head back against the tree, humming again. It wasn't till after quite a bit that a weird smell filled the air. It smelled like lavender and fruit and it was coming from the tree....What the actual hell? Ok I may not know anything really about trees or plants but normal trees don't feel or smell like this one. I had been breathing out of my mouth and the air left a sour taste on my tongue. I let out a gasp when my throat constricted, cutting off my air supply. I was gasping for air and tears pricked at my eyes. How do trees do this to a person! My thoughts became muddled and blurred and black dots invaded my vision and I felt my body slump to the ground as I fell into darkness.

I was taking a walk through the forest when I almost ran into that brat from yesterday. I had walked on some leaves not knowing there was anyone else around. I suddenly heard her call out a "hello?" I almost smiled at that. What if I had been a murderer or some shit it's not like I'd just say "Yeah I'm over here" If you understand what I mean. She just shrugged it off after a minute and walked away as did I not wanting to run into her again. I didn't really know what direction I was walking in until I ended up at a succubus tree. I stayed a good distance away from the tree to avoid the gases. The trees started showing up just after the titans apparently and there rare to come by but there still around. I walked around the tree keeping my distance to continue my walk until I saw her. That brat was laying directly under the tree unconscious. Shit she's going to get herself killed. I took a deep breath and quickly walked up to her picking her up bridal style and we are both lucky she's light. My lungs started to burn with need for air and I wasn't out of range with the gases yet I'd only taken a couple brisk steps. I involuntarily took a deep breath of air in, already tasting the sour on my tongue. Shit we'll both get caught here. I ran farther than i had been before away from the tree placing her down on the ground before I dropped her from my dizziness. I fell to my knees taking in deep breaths of clean air as the black dots that once invaded my vision faded. My breathing steadied and I looked over to see the girl still unconscious but breathing. I'd better take her to Hanji she knows more about those trees than I do. I stood up and picked the girl up again walking in the direction I had come at a fast pace. She was breathing but barely. Her breaths were ragged and uneven. How long had she been under there? When I had gotten back to the cabins I could see a boy and girl bickering to each other. "I don't know did you see her leave the cabin at all?!" the boy yelled. "No! she was gone when everyone woke up!" The girl yelled back with just as much force. I was walking towards Hanji's cabin and passed them both turning to me and I just looked at them bored. "Nani!" The guy yelled out what's his name Eren? Eren Jeager? yeah that's right. The two kept bombarding me with questions as I walked to Hanji's cabin but I ignored them and glared at the girl when she suspected I did something to her. Nani? I think so. I kicked Hanji's door three times as a knock and waited until I could hear her footsteps behind the door. It swung open to reveal the brown haired annoying brat who was smiling like an idiot as she pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose. "What's going on shorty?" She asked then noticed the girl in my arms. "I found her under a succubus tree. I don't know how long she was under it." I said possibly answering any of her questions. Hanji nodded and took her out of my arms bringing her inside and I looked two the two brats behind me. "We're not leaving" They both said and I let out a 'tch' "Yes you are you both have training and I'm not going to be babysitting you two when I already have another problem to deal with now go back to your cabins" I said looking at them with a stern look. I was annoyed that I had to deal with these brats in the first place. I glared at them when they didn't move "That was an order" I said sternly and I watched as Jeager's shoulders slumped in defeat and he pulled the girls shoulder ushering her to follow. She shook off his arm and came right up in my face. "You make sure she's safe or I'll beat you until all the bones in your body are broken I don't care if your my superior." She spat at me. I didn't answer I just stared at her with a bored expression on my face and waited until they had walked away. I walked through the open front door and walked towards Hanji's room when I heard strings of profanity and frantic shuffling behind her door. I knocked twice and just stared at her when she opened the door. "Go look for my cooling blankets They aren't in here and her temperature spiked. I just nodded slightly and started looking in hallway closets and everywhere I could until I spotted them in a closet under the staircase. I brought them to Hanji's room but this time I just opened the door letting myself in. "I got your-" I stopped mid sentence at the sight in front of me. "The girl was lying on Hanji's bed covered in a blanket and I could tell she didn't have a shirt on anymore because of her bare shoulders and arms. She was sweating profusely and her breaths were more sickly and intense. "Hanji what's wrong with her." I asked once she swiped the blankets out of my arms placing them on the girls body under the blanket so I wouldn't see anything. "I uh I don't really know I only have limited knowledge of the trees but they seem to have been mutating over the past year. They're getting bigger and more lethal. Ummm she must've been under the tree for over ten minutes Uh her air supply had been cut off which meant the gases got into her system and are currently in her blood stream. I injected her with an anti-infectent serum that should fight off the gases but it's hard to tell how long that'll take depending on how contaminated the blood cells are. The serum could have no affect if The bacteria reached her brain already. If that happened it means the bacteria will eat away at veins causing her to bleed internally all over her body. I wont be able to tell for days even a week if the bacteria reached her brain. If that happened her brain stem will shut down causing her brain to become corrupted by the bacteria which will cause her brain and almost all of her body functions to shut down almost immediately afterwards. She'd be in a constant state of pain even in her comatose state she'd feel all of it." Her voice cracked at the last part and she sighed and pushed her glasses up her face again as she looked at her limp body on the bed. My eyes widened when Hanji mumbled to herself but not quiet enough I couldn't hear her "She's probably not gonna make it."
