Chapter 5
[ Alice POV ]
And then those big doors opened once again.
Miss Constance strolled in with a sort of annoyed look on her face, staring out at us all. I almost lost interest, and then someone else walked in.
And I swear my heart stopped beating.
He was tall and just...wow. Tattoos of all kinds covered his arms, and I could make out one scrawled along his chest. His hair was tousled up under his beanie, and he was just a simple brunette. Pink, perfect lips curved up into a small smile, jeez. His eyes...oh god. They were mesmerizing. Even from across the room, I could see those gorgeous, blue eyes. I felt like I was in a trance. Wow. I couldn't keep my eyes off him. Which was sort of a problem.
I pulled out a cigarette and lit it, listening to Miss Constance as she introduced him and quickly left the room, leaving him with the company of Dillon.
Louis Tomlinson.
I kept my gaze on him as he sat down at a table, a little bit closer than when he had first walked into the room. Dillon started talking, and kept talking and talking and talking. Poor guy. Louis' attention soon wandered away from Dillon's words and instead focused on everyone else in the room. I smiled a bit and nodded, looking around myself at the freaks in here. Definitely more interesting than anything Dillon had to say.
I was in the middle of taking another drag of my cigarette when our gazes met, and I'm surprised I could even continue smoking. Those eyes were literally entrancing. I shook my head a bit and blew the smoke out in front of me, but never tearing away from that boy's gaze for a second.
It felt like forever before his eyes left mine, and I saw him say something to Dillon, in which he looked over at me and then back to Louis. And then he started talking again, probably talking about what a psychotic bitch I was.
I chuckled a bit and blew more smoke out, finding Louis' gaze again and smiling sweetly at him. I could see a small smile tug at his lips before he was escorted out, stealing one more glance at me before the doors shut behind him.
Smiling, and taking a long drag of my cigarette, I knew.
He was the one.
Eventually, Dillon wandered back into the common room, so I stood up, leaving my cigarette behind in an ash tray, and walked over to him. He looked up and raised an eyebrow at me, "What can I do for you, Alice?" I smiled up at him and stuck my hands in my pockets, nodding at a table. "I want to talk is all.. Need someone normal to have a conversation with." Dillon's expression didn't falter, but he nodded and led me over to a table, sitting down. I sat down in front of him, smiling more, "It's just nice to have a normal conversation every once in a while. Don't exactly get to have that with any of these guys." I rolled my eyes and Dillon chuckled a bit, nodding and sitting up in his seat.
"Well, normal it is.. How are you today?" I shrugged, drumming my fingers against the table, "Good as it gets for a mental patient I guess. What about you?" He finally smiled and shrugged back, tilting his head to the side. "Good as it gets for an employee for a mental institution." I chuckled and nodded, biting my lip and looking up at him. "So uhm.."
"You wanna know about the volunteers right?" Dillon interrupted me, his eyebrows furrowed slightly. I laughed and smirked a bit, leaning back in my chair and tucking some hair behind my ear. "Yeah, especially that one guy today." I watched his expression barely change for a second, but I saw it flicker. "Funny, he was asking about you too." He almost sounded amused, and I nodded at him, giving him signal to continue. He sighed and ruffled his hair slightly, leaning forward as if we were sharing some big secret.
"He thought you were pretty normal looking, innocent even."
I couldn't help but laugh, covering my mouth to muffle it a little bit. Dillon just staring at me, waiting for some sort of response.
Innocent? Normal?! You have got to be kidding me. I'm not even ashamed to say it, but I'm far from either of those.
"Shame. He sees a mental patient and thinks she's normal." Dillon chuckled and nodded, standing up and extending his hand, which I took, standing up myself. "It's almost time for dinner. I'll go ahead and walk you over to the cafeteria if you like." I nodded and smiled, releasing his hand and following as he led me out, the other patients coming out behind us, escorted by all of the other guards.
Even though Dillon was really obnoxious at times, he wasn't as bad as I thought. Hey, he gave me a normal conversation, he seemed alright to me.
We walked in silence, side by side, all the way to the cafeteria. We passed by my cell and I grumbled, staring straight ahead until we reached our destination. Dillon opened the door up for me, and I just stood there. I was shocked. He smiled and placed a hand on the small of my back, guiding me into the cafeteria while I just shook my head in disbelief.
He was actually nice to me. I could hardly believe it. the door up for me, like a perfect gentleman. Wow. Why didn't I try and talk to this guy before?
Oh yeah, that's right. I thought he was annoying as fuck before.
After surfacing from my thoughts, I found Dillon standing in front of me, smiling and nodding at the kitchen. "You should probably go eat now, I have to be on duty." I nodded and stared at him, blinking a bit. I shook my head and smiled a bit before turning towards the kitchen, "By the way, thanks." He cocked his head to the side and chuckled, shaking his head. "Go eat."
So I did, I smiled at him once more, walking over to the kitchen and grabbing a gray of food. We were only brought our food whenever Miss Constance had a special announcement, all other times we had to get it ourselves. Which wasn't really as bad as other patients made it out to be.
I sat down at the end of a table, alone, like usual, and started eating, and observing. I watched other patients sit in little groups, or just one by one down the table, and then there were some that just completely separated themselves from everyone, kinda like me.
I smiled and pushed my tray away, leaning back in my chair and watching.
I won't be eating alone again.
