Jeff and I were in our hideout, I was laying on the wood floor and he was sitting next to me. We were discussing our life and the problems we've dealt with.
My phone vibrating against the floor and I grunted and I picked it up.
Dad: hey sweetie, I'll be home in an hour. Two hours at the most. If you get hungry, there's some food in the kitchen since I went shopping while you were asleep. Love you! Don't wander too far from the house.
I had read the message outloud and Jeff looked at me.
"You have to go home in a couple of hours then?"
I nodded while texting my dad back.
You: Okay, dad. I'm in the woods right now but I'm not too far from home. I'll stay safe. Thanks for letting me know about the food. Love you too💞.
I sent the message and stretched out on the floor.
Jeff looked at me and chuckled.
"What?" I smiled at him.
"Oh, nothing." Jeff chuckled more before booping my nose.
"Hey, Jeff?" I asked.
"Yeah?"
"Do you have any friends?"
Jeff rubbing his chin a bit, staring at the wall.
"Hmm.." He continued to rub his chin. "A couple or so, yes. They all live on our street, and they're very similar to us. Two of them are in a relationship and the other three aren't. Why ask?"
I shrugged.
"Was just wondering. Figured I would probably need a few friends, but I should probably only be friends with the people that you're friends with, shouldn't I?"
Jeff nodded.
My phone vibrated again.
Dad: Who are you with?
I looked at Jeff and showed him the text message.
"Just say it's your neighbor Jeff. And that you and I became friends while he was gone. As simple as that." Jeff shrugged.
You: Just with our neighbor, Jeff. Him and I became friends while you were gone.
I sent the message. I was about to put my phone down when it vibrated another time.
Dad: Can't wait to meet him :) You should invite him over for dinner tonight!
"Dinner? Tonight? My place?" I asked Jeff. "My dad wants to meet you.."
"Sure, why not?" Jeff smiled brightly.
You: Okay, dad. Want him to come home with me when we're done in the woods?
Dad: That would be great! What kind of food does he like?
"What's your favorite food?" I asked Jeff.
"Hmmmm.. Healthy foods. Like pasta salad for example."
I told my dad and he said that's what dinner was tonight. Then my dad and I said bye and I could finally put my phone down after setting an alarm for an hour and a half from now.
Jeff pulled me onto his lap and held me in his arms. I curled up and felt so comfortable that I fell asleep. I felt him put a cozy blanket over me and he kept me in his arms. Then I only saw black.

"Psst. Wake up.." Jeff was shaking me a bit.
I rubbed my eyes and yawned, hearing Jeff laugh quietly.
When my eyes opened, he was looking down at me. It was slightly dark and I realized that he was carrying me through the woods, back to my house.
"You could have woken me up at the-"
"Shh, I know. But you just looked so cute, I couldn't do it." Jeff smiled.
I looked to the side, in front of Jeff, and saw my house a few feet from where we were.
Eventually we reached my house and Jeff set me down in front of the door. My dad's truck was parked in the driveway, indicating that he was home. I could hear him making dinner in the kitchen.
I stretched my arms above my head and then opened the door.
"Boo!" I yelled. I heard something fall and I started laughing.
"Holy shit, Sam! You scared me!" My dad started laughing too before coming to the front area where Jeff and I were standing.
Jeff stook his hand out and my dad grabbed it.
"You must be Jeff!" My dad said happily, "Nice grip you've got there, son."
"Thank you sir." Jeff smiled.
"Well, don't just stand there. come on, come on! Let's get settled in the kitchen."
We got to the kitchen and started eating.
This was the beginning of it all.
The beginning of the lies I would have to tell..
