Truth #6: "That sounds delightful."
The door opened during his lunch period, and Draco took it as his cue to sigh dramatically, already knowing who it was at the door. "I swear, these kids make me want to kill myself." Slightly over dramatic, but true nonetheless. Kids were idiots sometimes.
Potter scoffed at the statement. "You're such a drama king. Get out of here." He walked up to the desk and grabbed the chair at the front that was there specifically for him. He sat quite close to Draco, less than a foot away. Draco found he didn't really mind as much as he should have.
"I'm being serious," Draco said, sighing before lightly slamming his head against his desk with a groan.
"Woah, woah, calm down!" Potter spoke up, his words slightly louder and more concerned. "Why'd you do that for?"
Draco grumbled a bit, staring at the unmarked assignments on his desk. It was only about five weeks into the school year and he already had enough. "To hell with getting paid, I'm done," he mumbled, and Potter laughed. The sound made him feel a bit better, but he still wanted to move to Mexico and change his name in order to get away from his responsibilities. "I wish humans could hibernate," he complained, and he didn't need to look up to know that Potter was rolling his eyes.
"You're so dramatic. But hey, you deserve a break if you're already complaining. Wanna grab a coffee or something?"
Draco sat up straight from slouching over his desk and looked at Potter, blinking in surprise. He never really took Potter for the type of guy that invites people for a coffee, but life is certainly filled with surprises. "That sounds delightful," he said, and it was the truth.
Within five minutes, they were sitting in Potter's car, which was cute and small (kinda like Potter himself). Somehow, the car ride was an adventure in itself, featuring Potter's awful singing and Draco playing DJ and being in charge of the radio. Draco always assumed Potter could sing, since his normal voice was quite lovely, but he had certainly been proved wrong. Either way, it was funny, and Draco found he couldn't stop laughing even if he wanted to.
They reached the closest coffee shop quickly, which turned out to be Tim Horton's, and although Draco had been there millions of times, this time felt special. They both got out of the car and went in. As a joke, instead of holding the door open, Potter shut it behind him, leading Draco to bumping into it roughly. "Sorry, not sorry," he said when Draco opened the door and glared at him. Thankfully, he wasn't bleeding anywhere, but it stung a bit. At least he got back at Potter by shoving him into the wall in a public cafe.
They went up to order, and Draco requested a coffee with one milk and two sugars, while Potter ordered it black. They sat down at the table in the corner, which was right next to these large and pretty windows. Tim Horton's somehow seemed more delightful when Potter was there.
They chatted for a bit in between sips. Their talks usually consisting of stupid jokes and heavy sarcasm, as well as teasing and kicking each other under the table when the other said something especially stupid. Draco found it really was pleasant. It was the first time he'd gone to a cafe with someone else, and it wasn't as bad as he previously believed it to be. It was much better than sitting alone and doing work on a laptop or marking tests. Potter was his friend, he just realized. Potter was really his friend. He enjoyed spending time with him.
"What're you thinking about?" Potter asked, and only then did Draco realize he zoned out and was probably staring at nothing. He smiled apologetically and curled his fingers around his coffee, craving the warmth.
"Nothing important," he said, because it was stupid to say he was thinking about how lucky he was to have a friend. Draco Malfoy wasn't one for friends. Of course, he had a few good acquaintances, such as Mrs Weasley and Mrs Parkinson, but he never had someone to get a coffee with. As an introvert, he didn't think he'd like it at all, but Potter really made it more than bearable.
"Thank for inviting me for a coffee," Draco said, because the least he could give Potter was a thank you. "I owe you one. Next time, it's on me," he said, hoping that there would be a next time.
Potter laughed. "Of course it'll be on you. You're acting as if I've got the funds to be your sugar daddy," he joked, and Draco kicked him under the table with a joking glare.
"I hate you," he said with a pout, and both of them knew he was only joking. Potter rolled his eyes.
"You've lost the rights to hate me, I just bought you coffee."
"I got you gummy bears."
"You said it was a welcome gift. I don't owe you if it was a gift."
Draco kicked him under the table again, enough to sting but not to actually hurt. He pouted childishly. "You're a dickwad."
Potter only smiled sarcastically. "Thanks," he said, rolling his eyes.
Soon, they finished their coffee, and were on their way back to the school. Potter was singing obnoxiously again, and even though Draco had a headache, he didn't really mind that much. "If you weren't driving, I'd shove you so hard you'd dent the door," he threatened. Potter just laughed and shoved Draco.
"Good thing I can do it, then," he said, and Draco glared at him.
They reached the school way too soon for Draco's liking; getting to school meant having to teach for two more periods. He grumbled under his breath, his misery returning to him at the thought of his responsibilities. Potter apparently noticed this, because soon he was reassuring him, saying "calm down, you'll be okay."
"Yeah right," Draco replied, and got out of the car. Potter followed, and they walked up to the school entrance together. Since their classrooms were across the hall from each other, they both walked through the hallways together. A few girls here and there glanced adoringly at the two attractive teachers, but a lot of students stared suspiciously.
"It seems that the Matter ship has sailed," Potter whispered in his ear jokingly as they neared their classrooms, and he was met with an expected shove.
"I'm going to sink your ship," Draco whispered back to him before turning to walk to his own class. Before he walked through the door, he heard Potter's dramatic gasp, and he smiled to himself.
If anything, Potter really did make his days more bearable.
