I was still in my place, as though I was a little mouse, apprehensive as a hawk as it eyed it's prey. Although I was calm on the outside, my insides were screaming for me to do something, anything. With a sudden jolt of energy, I charged toward him and was in his face in seconds.
"You do not own me." I seethed through my teeth.
"I sure as hell do." he bellowed. "You live in my house, under my rules. I do own you." I grunted and stormed past him, unable to keep the look of disdain from my face. I slammed my bedroom door and the tears were streaming from my eyes. My step-father was heartless towards me. He expected me to praise him since he was my fatherly figure, but i would never soil the name "father". My back straightened when I heard a familliar voice. It was coming from my back pocket.
"Connor?" I answered my cell phone.
"Lily, what's wrong?" His voice was thickly coated with concern. I must have inadvertently dialed his number when I sat down.
"Connor, I need to get out of here, will you pick me up?" I spoke quickly as I gathered my things, knowing he would say yes.
"I'll be there in five minutes".
"I owe you one" I said, a hint of a smile on my lips.
"You owe me a lot, now get your butt in gear."
I clicked the end button. I loved how my best friend could make me smile, even in the toughest of times. He was no ordinary person, he was what one would call a "bad boy". Between the leather jacket and piercings, people were skeptical of him, but he proved himself by being very polite. He never skipped out on the please and thank you's. He had been an extraordinary friend since our middle school years, when we first met, and I would never doubt he would be there when I needed him. When I saw his car pull up outside my window, I made subtle movements opening the window, so I didn't get caught. I ran towards his car in a hurry. In my furious condition, I was surprised I didn't break down in the driveway and slash my step-dad's tires. I hopped into the front seat and quietly closed the door in one fluid movement. As he sped away from my house, I focused all of my energy on not curling up into a ball and weeping. When we got to his house, he unlocked the front door for me.
"Lily. Please tell me what happened." Connor spoke softly as we sat on his couch. When he touched my arm, I started to cry. Just his slightest touch sent me into a frenzy.
"I hate Jim! Today he saw that I was texting you and started screaming at me. My mom tried defending me, but he threatened her and she backed off. I think he was going to hit me." By the time I'd finished ranting, my face was beet red and wet with tears. Being the calm, laid-back person he is, Connor hugged me tightly.
"Well," he started, "your evil step-father needs to go." That's the thing i love about Connor. He was so blunt and didn't go around in circles, trying to get to the point. "I just don't understand why he has to take it out on you and your mom." Connor pondered. I didn't know either. But I did know that something HAD to happen. And soon.
