"My own mother is shunning me!" I cried onto Connor's shoulder. "she won't answer my calls or text me back at all!" I let out a huge sob, probably ruining his shirt.

"Aw Lil, don't worry. I am sure your mother loves you." Connor spoke softly as he stroked my curly blonde hair. "Hey, if it makes you feel any better, you could call your friend...what was her name?"

     "Rachel?" I offered, sniffling.

"Yeah. Now why don't you call her to see if she wants to hang out here." he suggested, lightly pressing his lips to my forehead. I looked up at him with questioning eyes.

"Thank you, Connor." I whispered into his ear and broke away from his embrace. Not trusting my voice to work properly, I opted to text Rachel instead of calling.

Hey Rachel. I texted her. Thinking it would take her a while to respond, I set my phone down on the table. Just as I had turned to walk away, I heard a vibrating noise on the wood. I peeked at the lit up screen.

Hey Lil. What's up? Is what it said.

I was just wondering if you wanted to hang out at Connor's house.

Sure. I'll be there in ten.

As I was waiting for Rachel to arrive, I thought about our relationship. At first I couldn't remember why we hadn't hung out in a while. Then it hit me,it was because she was such a yenta. She gossiped about anyone and anything and it was getting under my skin. I didn't want to defile her-I mean, she was my best girl friend, but she did have a nasty reputation of talking shit about other people. The knock on my door pulled me from my memories. Surprised that she actually showed up on time, I checked my watch and realized that she was early..for once. I carefully unlocked the door and it swung open towards me.

"Lily!" I had barely enough time to step back. Rachel tried to jump into my arms and I lost my balance, sending us both toppling to the floor. Groaning in pain, we slowly got to our feet and hugged properly. "How are you?" She asked me a little breathlessly.

"Well it's been a bit rough the past few days." I answered her, honestly. As she poppled over to sit on the couch, Connor passed the room and waved hello.

"Hello Connor!" Rachel sang loudly enough for him to hear. She turned back to me with a sympathetic smile on her face. "What's the matter, honey?"

"Well for starters, did I tell you my step-dad hates my guts?" That was the start of a very long story. I started telling her about all the happenings of this summer, since I hadn't seen her since graduation. Then, I went on to tell her about the recent events. Throughout my telling, she would "oh" or "ugh" in the appropriate places. Occasionally, her lips would twist into a frown.

"Hold on. So you mean to tell me you're living with Connor?" She blurted out as soon as I had finished the last sentence of my story. Somehow, I'd seemed to captivate her by just that one sentence. She'd looked rather bored througout the description of my terrible life. She tried to be inconspicuous as she asked what I thought about living with him, but we both knew she wanted to ask if we'd done anything.

"You know," I told her sternly, "I have been friends with Connor ever since middle school. He's like my big brother, and nothing more." As I told Rachel that, her face fell. She must have been looking for some juicy gossip to tell her friends.

After all of our serious talking was over, we switched to a lighter subject and joked around. We'd spent the rest of the day sitting on Connor's-well, our- couch, gossiping. I wondered if Connor had heard anything we said. Especially the first part; the part about him. Even though I could care less about the gossip she was dumping on me, her bubbly personality was soon infecting me. I was a bit sad when she announce she had to leave, but I told her to drive safely as always. As soon as I'd closed the door, I felt relief. There was only so much of Rachel any sane person could take. After watching the blue car drive away and wishing I had one, I practically tip-toed into our bedroom. As I stood at the doorway, he looked up from the magazine he was reading and smirked at me. I gave him a questioning look and drudged to the closet. I picked out my favorite pair of fuzzy shorts my old volleyball t-shirt. Without glancing in his direction, I slowly made my way to the bathroom. I took as long as I could getting my pj's on and getting washed. Frankly, I wasn't tired and I didn't want to have to go into the bedroom and have Connor fall asleep before me. He was no fun sometimes. When I couldn't stall any longer. I opened the door and ran smack into Connor's chest. I felt his arms snake around my waist. Absentmindedly, I slipped my arms around his neck and looked up at him, questioningly. He pulled me tightly and hugged me. I couldn't help but grin when he hugged me like that. Too soon he pulled away and looked at me. It felt like his gaze was burning into my soul. He smiled his dazzling smile that I'd only seen a few times and would make any other girl swoon. Any girl but me, that is. I was the only exception. I was his best friend. Some could even say his sister. But never his lover.
