"When the human race died out, animals began to try and take their place. Each one wanted to become the next dominant species over the entire planet, and were ready to fight for this goal.

"Alas, after a massive war, only two groups remained; the canines, loyal and courageous; and the felines, sly and cunning. Both had experienced a 'spontaneous evolution' in which they gained the ability to walk on two legs, and had the intelligence of the extinct humans. The two groups could not seem to find a reason to share the world together, but they knew they couldn't afford to fight over everything.

"Upon finding an abandoned human city, they decided to settle there. Canines took the western segment of the city, rich in forests, steel factories, and leather. Felines made the eastern segment their home, which was abundant in oil and gasoline, as well as grassy farmland.

"Soon, however, the canines realized they needed fuel to power vehicles the humans once used. They had little to feed their horses. Felines had fuel and hay, but needed steel for tools, paper and wood, and leather for tack.

"So, the two sides decided to create a treaty. This peace treaty said that they would agree to send resources to each other that they needed. They also agreed not to spy on each other, infiltrate each others' sides, and most importantly, not to go to war. "

Cameron Trace read the last word and closed his history book, flopping back onto the grass with a sigh. He knew this already — the story of how canines and felines came here was a monotonous tale told each year in school.

He already knew the canines and felines hated each other. He, too, despised the felines just like any other canine where he lived. In the western sector, where trees shrouded parks and factories hissed with smoke and steam, Cameron felt at home.

Well, almost — for he was the only known human to exist. How he had gotten here? Well, he didn't know. Nor did he really think on it much.

"Cam, are you being a nerd again?" Kaiden, his brother, barked, flopping onto the grass with a toothy grin.

Kaiden, like the rest of the Trace family, was a gray wolf. He stood at a muscular, massive six feet, while Cam lagged at a scrawny build and a height of five-eight at the most.

The human boy snorted, elbowing his brother playfully. The two were extremely close; while Cam could do algebra without a problem, Kaiden was the one who shielded him from the snappy teenage dogs at school.

Cam shook his head, shoving the textbook into his bag. "Nah. It's just some boring crap."

Kaiden nodded, peering behind him. They all knew about the moat that separated both sides — it was deep, water laying stagnant below. The only way across was using the collapsible bridges operated by soldiers.

"Hey, looks like we're getting some more resources," Kaiden said, his triangular ears perking towards the rumbling of an engine.

Cam watched as a long, white truck waited across on the Eastern sector, and a massive concrete bridge lowered upon the moat. Within minutes, the truck crossed to their side of the city, roaring past them and down the street.

"Hey, Kai?" Cam inquired, staring into the distance. He watched the only bridge that didn't collapse; a simple grey box of a small building lay between the two cities, no windows, and seemingly no doors.

"What?" The wolf replied, glancing at the direction of Cam's interest.

    "What's that building?"

"Eh, something they call 'The Border'. That's where the canine and feline mayors meet on peaceful terms."

    Cam narrowed his eyes. "Huh."
