My hands have never worked as quickly between flicking to the next page of the file and snapping a picture. Any normal person would have abandoned ship right when they hung up. I knew that I would never get a chance like this again and yes I could get caught any second and the whole operation would be blown. This needed to be done."Hello?" My heart stops as I hear Miles' voice and I manage to snap the last picture before shoving the file back into its compartment and shutting the metal door softly.
With shaky hands I get to my feet as I hear him coming up the stairs rather quickly and I curse quietly as I drag the swivel chair back to where it was and toeing the rug back flat on the ground.
"Hello? Anyone here?" My dad calls as his footsteps echo down the hallway.
"Fuck." I gasp quietly as I retract my steps from the door where I was hoping to quickly make my escape. I felt cornered.
I quickly shove the phone in my back pocket before glancing at the window, biting my lip.
I take in a breath before quickly walking to the door. Hands shaking as I reach for it only to be yanked backwards and a frowning Miles stands in front of me.
"Hi dad." I smile up at him. He smiles warily down at me.
"Hey, what are you doing in here? Where's your mother?" He asks suspiciously and I take in a breath.
"Mum and Jenna went into town and said they'd be back earlier. I was just using your laptop for school research." I glance back at the laptop and don't miss how his eyes follow me. I turn back to him curiously.
"You're home early." I observe smiling up at him before I frown quickly, letting my face fall.
"You're not leaving on another trip are you?"
"No Tony-" Miles frowns down at me in confusion, taking in a breath.
"I was actually hoping you were home. I got off work early because I wanted to talk with you."
I gulp as I look up at him curiously. Bringing my hands around my back to hide the shakiness.
"Talk about what dad?"
He sighs and brings a hand up to pat my shoulder, ushering me to sit down on the chair. I gulp as I walk over quickly to the swivel chair and sit down softly. He follows me and sits on the window ledge looking at me worriedly.
"The principal called about a fight you had with some other boy-"
I blink repeatedly as I quietly let out a breath of relief, making sure he didn't notice. I bring my hand up to scratch my head awkwardly.
"Tony-" He frowns. "If you're being bullied-"
"Dad." I frown shaking my head. "I'm fine. I'm not being bullied. There's just some kids at school giving me a bit of trouble but I can deal with it."
"What sort of trouble?" He questions seriously and I frown biting my lip.
"There's this boy in my year...he calls me a nerd and pushes me around sometimes but I'm fine dad, honest-"
"Your brother doesn't know about this-"
"I-" I shake my head looking down. "I didn't want him to know. He's been busy and I guess I didn't want to trouble him." I lie through my teeth.
Miles sighs as he gets up from the window ledge, I follow his actions as I get up from the swivel chair.
Miles reaches a hand out to ruffle my hair and I take in a breath.
