The Stone House

After our encounter with the Ice Queen, Queen Diana told me to leave the castle and to come back the next day, after they had discussed the situation and how Strong Cold soldiers got into the city. So I left reluctantly and went down to the stables. My horse, Skotadi, was waiting for me. He was a completely black stallion. (Yes, most of my stuff was black--it suited me).

To be honest, I didn’t think Diana thought of the fact that Tekely, my home town, was in the palace. I left most of my belongings in The Charred Plans, a small town on the edge of the border between The Old Flame and The Strong Cold. That was where I used to live, it was also where I was trained to kill people. It wasn't where I always lived, I used to live in Blaze, the large city surrounding the castle.

Suddenly I knew where I would go. I hopped onto my black horse and rode him to the outskirts of Blaze where the large house, in which I used to live in, should be. It had been eleven years since I was in the building, but still it remained unbought for the people of Blaze respect the memories of a small boy who lost his parents to a Strong Cold raiding party that often hit the outskirts of the city. The scene was all too familiar. The door knocked down by men in silver armor with blue capes massacring my brother, sister, mother, and father. A massacre in which I only escaped by hiding under a loose floor board. I was left with no family. A boy alone in the world. My only reason for living was hate, a powerful motivator under the right circumstances.

I left and went to The Old Flame’s army. I would not die, I would not let my loss be in vain. So I didn't just join a military division, I joined the Elite division. I was originally going to go into the standard Elite unit, but no, I got put into the Elite Combat Unit and became the queen’s second all in a matter of a day of my training being all done.

The day that I put on my helmet I became a powerful leader, one that was exposed to a horrible life that made me the man I was. A loyal and strong person. In a matter of speaking it was necessary for my family to die, as painful as that is for me to say, it was. If my parents never died I would never even have thought about joining an army. I would never have that hate that makes it possible to do the things that I have to do. Killing people is not easy, but when you have little bit of hate it makes everything easier.

I have Syron to thank, if it weren't for him, I would be a cold, mindless killer. Without him I would not have the small amount of warmth in my life that I do. I needed a friend, and I got more than that, I got a new family. Most people join the Old Flame because they want a dragon or wealth;  anger was my reason--and the wrong reason.

I found my old room and layed down on my bed. Eleven years and I still fit in it. It might have been the fact that my eight year old self had a bed fit for a queen. In my bed, I thought about where Syron might be at this moment. Even though my dragon loves me and if I needed him he would be there, but dragons are free spirits. They love to fly and when they fly it can’t always be with their rider.

I soon found myself thinking about Diana and the Elite Combat Unit. The Strong Cold infiltrated the most heavily armed city in all of the continent of Highbul and somehow got out unscarred.

I must have fallen asleep at some point because the next thing I remembered was waking up to a loud crash outside.
I nearly fell out of my bed, but managed to keep my grip. The sun was just starting to come up. That meant I had to go to the meeting today, just great. I stood up and walked to the door, then opened it, looking for the source of the crash. The street was completely deserted. The only movement was a stray dog digging through a man’s garbage. After stepping out into the road I heard a familiar roar . I turned to see Syron--now the size of a large horse. He must of hit his growth spurt.

Dragons will have times in their lives when they grow extraordinarily fast. I mean very fast. Like Syron was the size of a small pony and now the size of a large horse. Amazing! I knew my dragon was now large enough to be ridden, so I decided to take advantage of his new size and climbed up on his back. In training, we were taught how to ride a dragon so we did not have go back to camp whenever our dragons got large enough to ride. We took to the sky, and flew around sixty feet in the air. It felt great to fly among the birds. Syron accelerated, climbing higher and higher until we were at least two hundred feet in the air.
An hour later we were still soaring in the sky. I was considering flying higher when a small golden dragon with orange wings flew up next to us. The dragon slowed, revealing Edd on its back. He motioned for us to land. Despite how rude he was yesterday, I did as he asked and landed.

He landed next to me and dismounted. I followed his lead. As soon as I got off Syron, he said, “Queen Diana requests your presents in the War Room.”

“Is this about the spies and small force that got passed our line of defence yesterday?” I asked quickly in response.

“That is not my place to say, and even if it was, I would not tell you out here. Men like you are the reason why the Strong Cold got in, in the first place.”

“And why would that be?” I asked in a defensive voice.

“Why? Because you were so eager to learn what you were summoned for, you revealed to the public that our lines were broke.” He said angrily

“No one is even out here.” I pointed out
“You don’t think that people live in the houses around here?” He said in a raised voice taking a step closer to me.

“It’s not like--” I started.

“You made us look weak by telling everyone about our lack of security.” he interrupted.

“And us arguing like the commen sell-swords out here isn't making us look weak?”  I pointed out.

He seemed stumped by my question. We stood there for a few more minutes before he finally said, “We shouldn't keep the queen waiting.” And with that, he climbed onto his dragon and took off.
