Chapter 2 - Clouds

( Third persons pov )
The sun appeared up from behind the Hokage mountains, it's rays of light hitting the village hidden in the leaves, enlightening the village below. It was just coming up to seven o'clock in the morning, it was the time that most of the villagers would be waking up for work or to send their children to the ninja academe.
A little nine year old Naruto was still asleep at this time in the classroom but his demonic companion would surely wake him up in due time.
A hour passed, and the sun shun high and bright in the light blue sky. It was nearly time for the ninja academe to start, there was only a few minutes left for the bell to ring. All the teachers were in the teachers kitchen, arguing about who ate the ramen and bread; little did they know it was a hungry and exhausted Naruto. The students were in the play ground waiting for the bell to dismiss them to their classroom. The Hokage and his wife were watching there 'only' son with pride as he 'made' friends.
However, Shikamaru Nara didn't want to wait for the bell. He said it was too 'troublesome' to make his way to class with all the other students, so he started walking there early.
Once he had arrived, he slid the door open and found himself with a 'sleeping' Naruto. Naruto had censed someone coming and woke up before Kurama could have warned him, but he chose to pretended to sleep when he realized that it was just Shikamaru.
Shikamaru made his way to his seat beside Naruto and sat down quietly, making sure not to wake the sleeping blond.
He sat there for a couple of minutes staring at the said boy with curiosity. 'He's really small for our age, his height and weight. He looks like he's four years old, not nine! Why isn't he eating? Doesn't Uzumaki-sama and Hokage-sama make him eat like Kaa-san does with me? Is he sick? His hair is duller, but I think thats cause he's not eating properly... And his eyes have been... His eyes are so dull now, they used to be so bright just like his smile. But he doesn't smile anymore, jeez he doesn't even talk' Thought the brunette whilst he continued staring at his companion.
"Could you stop staring, it's very distracting" said the blond. His voice was rough, as if it hadn't been used in years. He turned around to face the other boy, Shikamaru blushed and turned away, he had been caught staring. "Sorry" was all he said. "Naruto I know it's not my place to ask but, em why are you so small?" Asked the brunette. The blond was quite surprised by the question, but he answered none the less. "You're right, it's not your place to ask." Responded the blond. The brunette was a bit startled by his answer, it sound nothing like the Naruto he used to know. "I'm sorry for asking, it's just tha-" Shikamaru was cut off by Naruto, he waved the brunette off. "But I will tell you, because you seem, how do I put it, not a bad person. A trustworthy person." Said Naruto. "You see, I'm in a situation were I can't control a single thing. I hold something that I have no control over, but people don't seem to see it like that. So my parents forgot about me after I turned three and I have been basically living on the streets since. Sure I have a bedroom at home, but I can only use it if I get home on time." Said the blond. "So you don't eat? Like at all?" Asked Shikamaru, he was dumbfounded. "Well yeah I eat, sometimes that is... I eat out of the trash, thats if I'm lucky though. I ate here lat night, ramen and some bread out of the teachers kitchen. It's all I've ate in three days." Said the blond. "I'm so sorry about that Naruto, I had no idea! Doesn't your Kaa-san or Tou-san feed you?" Asked Shikamaru. Naruto scoffed at his suggestion, "Hokage-sama and Lady Kushina-sama. They forgot about me when I turned three, they only acknowledge me when they want me to be a punching bag for their son. So no, they do not feed me." Said Naruto. Shikamaru looked down at his hands, they were forming in to a fist 'How dare they forget about their son! And their eldest at that?!' Thought the brunette. "Hey Naruto, wanna skip class and watch some clouds with me? Then we can go for something to eat, the new BBQ place just opened up." Offered Shikamaru. Naruto thought about it for a minute and the bell rang. "Sure, let's get out of this place. We can leave threw the window." Answered the blond. 'I just want to get out of this place' he thought
The academe students jumped out of the window as soon as their Sensei walked, they landed in a small tree. They got down from the tree and made their way out of the academe. As they were walking out of the academe, they spotted the Hokage and his wife. The Hokage stopped them. "Where do you think you boys are going? The bell just rang, you should get to class." He said. He stared at the blond boy, he knows him from somewhere. The other parents were watching as they left the place, they were glaring at Naruto and giving sympathetic looks to Shikamaru; this did not go unnoticed by the said brunette. He would ask Naruto about it later. "Do I know you from somewhere boy? You look really familiar..." Said Minato as he looked at Naruto. Kushina eyed the boy as well, "Now you say that Minato, he does look familiar. Who are your parents young man?" Asked the red headed lady. Shikamaru shook his head and grabbed Naruto's hand, Naruto jumped at the sudden contact but relaxed when he saw that it was only Shikamaru. "We must be going now, Hokage-sama, Lady Kushina-sama" Said the brunette whilst gritting his teeth. They both bowed and tried to leave, but were stopped by Kushina. "Listen here boy, we asked who he was. He will answer us, and now" She screeched, her hair was flaring up behind her. Naruto could feel Shikamaru tense, he squeezed his hand to reassure him that everything was okay. "Hokage-sama, Lady Kushina-sama. With all due respect, you should know who I am. You keep track of the files of all the people that live i the village, don't you? So you must surely know who I am, well my name at least... Or do you not memorize them like Sarutobi used to? He was a really good Hokage, it seems as if the leaf are lowering their standards. Too bad, and to think that we thought our parents generation, a youger one, was better..." Said Naruto. His voice was shaky and rough, he really hadn't talked for years. If asked a question in class, he would just shrug it off and not wanting to talk.
To say that Minato and Kushina were shocked would be an understatement, how dare this kid talk to them like that?! They were going to say something but Naruto went first. "Now if you please, Hokage-sama, Lady Kushina-sama. We are leaving, and you can't and wont do anything about it. So good day." Said the blond. He bowed and dragged Shikamaru away with him quickly, they made their way hand in hand, to an abandoned building so that they could watch the clouds. The BBQ that they were heading to, now forgotten.
They arrived at the building and went to up to the rooftops so that they could lay down and watch the clouds float away. They opened the door and sat on the floor, they looked across the village. "Minato and Kushina, I used to respect them. Minato, he's the Hokage; he's supposed to be the best of the best. And Kushina, she's supposed to be an amazing Konoichi. They both are horrible people, they didn't even know who you were! They are supposed to be your parents for Kami's sake! They are pathetic..." Ranted Shikamaru. Naruto just stared in amazement, no one had ever bad mouthed his parents ever, not even him. He was too scared to do so, even to Kurama. "Naruto..." Said Shikamaru, clicking his fingers in front of Naruto's face. "Hm? What is it?" Asked the blond. "You've been staring at me weirdly with a smile... You haven't smiled since we were like three maybe four, why now?" Asked the brunette. "It's just no one has ever bad mouthed Hokage-sama and Kushina-sama, not even stuck up for me like you did just now. You said that they are pathetic, which they absolutely are, but it's usually people saying that about me and not them..." Said the blond. He smiled at Shikamaru, it was a small smile, but a smile none the less. Naruto laid down to watch the clouds and Shikamaru copied him, "Thank you, Shika..." Said the blond as he drifted off into a peaceful sleep. "No problem, Naruto..." Said the brunette as he too drifted off in to a peaceful sleep. 'I should tell Tou-san about Naruto and his 'parents', maybe Tou-san would consider adopting Naruto. Yeah I'd like that, a brother...' Was the last thing on his mind went he finally drifted off with a smile on his face
