Chapter I
On a hot summers day on August 19th 1883 in Saumur, France Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel was born. Her parents were Eugine "Jeanne" Devolle and Albert Chanel. At birth Gabrielle's real last name was entered as "Chansel" but with her parents being absent so much her name was misspelled proprally due to clerical error. Gabrielle's mother and father eventually had 5 children and one Augustin who died in infancy.
As a kid Gabrielle did not have it easy her father was a street vender who worked day and night and her mother worked as a laundrywoman in the local hospital. The family would always be traveling and moving due to her fathers poor job. They would always have to live in poor run down lodgings.
Chapter II
At age twelve Gabrielle's mother died of bronchitis at age 31. Gabrielle's father sent her two brothers out to work as farm laborers and sent his three daughters to an orphanage in Central France. This orphanage was titled Corréze it was founded to "help the poor and innocent and orphaned girls"
The orphanage was not an easy place to live with harsh and strict discipline.
Gabrielle got much of her fashion inspiration from the buildings and the beautiful glass windows. From many of these memories in mind she created beautiful jewelry collections that replicated the many designs in the church, which includes her most famous symbol the CC.
At the orphanage Gabrielle told many of the workers and her friends that she liked to be called "Coco" she stated that it was a nickname that her father and mother had given her although they never had ever given her a nickname once in her life. But from then on she would always be known as "Coco Chanel".
When Coco turned 18 she was to old to stay at the orphanage so she was transported to a boarding house set aside for Catholic girls in the town of Moulins, France.
Chapter III
As a young child in the orphanage Coco Chanel always created elaborate fictions about her early life and never told the truth about her humble origins, Coco decided to create her own legacy. She stated that her father had left France for America and could not take Coco and her siblings with him. She also stated that she was born in 1893 instead of 1883 and that her mother died when she was two instead of when she was twelve.
