I walked into school, definitely not for the shenanigans today. The day had barely started and it was already off to a bad start for me. I woke up and my bantu knots I had done the night prior weren't cooperating so I had to settle for a turban up-do which also resulted in me being late. Mind you, this is now my 5th lateness this year so now I would have to serve a detention after school, not that I had anything better to do but the last thing on my list would be spending another minute in school. Grades also went in last night and I checked mine this morning only to see my calculus teacher didn't round my 89 to a A which means I now have one B on my report card. I'm a perfectionist and I also have a overbearing mother so now I'll have to go home and listen to her lecture me for hours .. great.

I walked into first period and noticed something strange. A white boy sitting in the back of the class. He stood out like no other seeing as though he was the only non-person of color in the room. We had a handful of white kids in the school but we all practically grew up together in the same neighborhood so that was nothing new. But having this guy pop up out of no where was weird for sure. Where had he even come from ?

I pushed the thought to the back of my head as breathed in, keeping my head high, and avoiding eye contact with any and everyone. Something I always did when I was surrounded by a crowd of people. I finally made my way to my desk and took a seat next to my friend Siani.

"Wassup with you Nova, what happened to you today  ?" She rolled her eyes and put a lot of emphasis on that last word. See, some of my friends like to refer to me as overly dramatic which is not true. Just because we react differently to certain things does not make me dramatic, it's so annoying when they say that.

I decided not to mention my grades because that would just set her off because she was barely coasting by. Not my fault that she doesn't put in as much effort that I do. No shade, that's still the homie.

"Nothing Si, I was just late again so I gotta serve a detention" I sighed. "Enough about me though, so um. . . who's the" I lowered my voice a bit "white boy ?" I wasn't one for drama or being then center of attention. I really kept to myself.

"Oh, his name is Nicholas but he said he'd like to be called Nick" she laughed obnoxiously causing the class to stare, including the new boy. "Girl like anybody gives a fuck. Now ima say one thing, he's cute but he's def gonna learn a lot here real quick."

I looked him up and down and took in his appearance  He actually had on a pretty dope fit. He had on some maroon asics, dark blue ripped jeans which weren't too tight . . thank God, and a maroon OBEY windbreaker. It was simple yet cute.

Then my eyes traveled to his face. His face was almost a tannish color, he didn't actually look entirely white the more you looked at him. He seemed to be mixed with something but I couldn't put my finger on it. I took in his rosy pink, semi-plump lips and his dark brown enticing eyes which fell right below his thick arched eyebrows. Si was wrong, he was far from cute . . he was gorgeous.

I snapped out of my daze and noticed him looking right at me. I don't know what got into but I smiled and sent a little wave his way. Surprising, he sent a little smirk back my way revealing a dimple on his left cheek. I turned back around to face the board. Oh God, I could feel my heartbeat rising and the sweat basically dripping from the pores.

"Nova, girl . . . you ard ?" Si asked, looking concerned.

I don't know what had gotten into my shy self. The Nova I know definitely wouldn't have done something so bold. The Nova I know would have remained unbothered and would have instead been focusing on what the teacher was lecturing the class about.

I definitely wasn't ard, I answered Si's question in my mind. Usually I would cry internally when the bell rang signaling Journalism was over. But this time I jumped from my seat leaving Siani behind. I heard her call my name but I kept walking, I felt his eyes burning a hole into my back but I dared not spare him a second glance. I would explain to her later why I acted the way I did. I rushed off to 2nd period hoping I would start to feel normal again.
