The keys

Forever

"Miss I will now scan you." The gatekeeper says, looking at me. He takes out a scanner to give him all my info. It makes a dark beeping sound and he waves someone over. They talk for a while like they're arguing. Then he scans Josh it makes a high pitched sound. Then he nods at Josh and we continue walking.

"What was that?" I ask.

"I have no idea." He answers.

We walk into our little room where the tubes are. I walk into my tube as a voice in the intercom counts down.

"....10 9 8 7........."

I clench my teeth together to get myself to stop shaking.

"....3....2......1....."

The tube starts to slowly go up. As soon as I see everyone else and the terrain around me i'm already off the platform, running toward the trees. I trip and fall right into Josh. We fall onto the ground holding each other catching our breath.

"Come on!" He yells.

He pulls me up and we keep running. We climb up the tallest tree I could find at the moment. I try to climb up the tree but I haven't done this before. My foot slips a couple times but I don't fall. We get up the tree we sit for a second, catching our breath. I lean back on a branch. All of a sudden someone throws a knife and it cuts into Josh's leg. He groans in pain.

I start to panick. I take the knife from his leg and throw it, hitting the girl in chest as she collapses to the cold, hard ground. I swing my legs over Josh's. I touch his wound as he grabs my face. He tilts my head up so I look into eyes. He grabs my jaw and slowly leans my lips to his face. He spreads his lips to match perfectly with mine. I push myself close to him as we sit there.

I remember he has a wound on his leg. I push my face away from his and smile. I go back to his wound. I take some string he had in the bag he collected in the middle and stitch it up. "It won't be better soon but it won't give you an infection."

"Thank you." He says. I nod.

"We should get going. The other tributes will find the keys faster." I say.

He nods and we hop off the tree. He is limping but he is well enough to walk on his own.

"So I guess the keys are in special places that we would think were never there." I say as we continue walking.

He nods.

"So if you see a hidden place around tell me." I say.

We walk around looking as I keep spitting out crap, "Also we need weapons so if you see any tell me also."

He just chuckles at me and smiles. We walk until I spot a little hole in the ground. I walk over to the hole.

When we get there I hesitantly slid my hand down the hole feeling around inside.

I touched something cold and hard, and pull it out of the hole. I squint one of my eyes, slowly opening the other, and see the key. It has a message on it. It reads, Clue Number 1: In the deep blue I found you.

"I found the first key. The next one I'm guessing is in the water, see."

He walks over and takes the key out of my hand and reads the clue out loud.

"In the deep blue I found you. So i'm guessing it's in the water somewhere."

Duh! But I ignore the comment.

We start walking, feeling the ground beneath us trying to find damp soil. As we walk I hold his hand, kissing him sometimes. I know the gamemakers are watching us that is why i'm being so careful. All the districts plus the capitol are watching us, enjoying our love story. That will get us farther, even though i'm not just doing it for the sponsors.
