Joining the war was never on your "to-do" list but a change once in a while can be a good thing. You never really meant to join it, it just sort of happened. So here you are, being a nurse in this war that seemed to be never ending.
"Miss (L/N) we have another one coming in and it's your turn!" You heard the head nurse yell.
You rolled your eyes and got up from one of the beds you were lying on during your fifteen minute break that was now cut to five. You dusted off the dirt on your uniform and made your way towards the cot where the newly wounded man was put. It was a routine injury, a soldier was grazed by a bullet and his wound was more of his pride for being so scared at such a minor thing. You just smiled and reassured the embarrassed man that you get many cases like this.Afterwards, you treated several other soldiers before your shift was finally over. As you were about to lay your head down to rest, a man walked into the tent and asked where he could find (Y/N) (L/N). All the nurses froze before pointing in your direction.
You were intimidated to say the very least. You noticed he was of high rank and you were trying to search your mind to find out if you had done anything wrong since you've been stationed here. Before you could answer the question bouncing in your mind, he reached you and roughly said that you were to meet the general.
"Now?" You questioned incredulously.
The man grumbled and grabbed your arm. He walked you out of the nurses' tent and towards the general's. You heartbeat started to pick up the pace the closer you got to the tent. Your brain was still scrambling to find out what you did wrong and yet you couldn't think because of how terrified you were. The man released your arm when you approached the entrance and ordered you to wait outside. The voices of the men strategizing stopped as your escort announced that you were here and you had half a mind to bolt off.
"Well bring her on in here. We need to do this as quickly as possible."
Now your entire body screamed at you to run. The man came back out and waved you in.
You shakily walked in with your head low as you saw all of the commanding officers staring at you. The general walked up to you and smiled."Now Miss (L/N) there's no reason to be frightened. I'm just here to have a quick talk with you." He nodded towards the other officers and they bowed to take their leave, leaving only you, him, and the glow of a candle on the other side of the room. He asked you take a seat and you sat down relieved that you weren't in trouble.
"I have heard the highest regards of many of my men about your work in the medical tent Miss (L/N)."
You blushed slightly and half shrugged, not really knowing what to say in front of him.
"And I also heard you're...quite good with a gun. Is that true?" He asked curiously.
You tensed up. It wasn't very proper for young ladies to know how to fire a weapon, but you asked one of the soldiers to teach you because if you're going to be in a war you damn well better know how to use a musket!
"Sir it's only for protection! It wasn't for anything else I swe-"
"Woah! You're not in trouble, Miss! It's just very...interesting that you do know how to both save someone's life but also take another." He said as he leaned back on his chair.
It was silent for a long time after that. The general seemed to be contemplating whether or not to tell you about something.
More time passed before you finally blurted out, "Is there something you need, Sir?"
His eyebrows furrowed, still debating with himself before he finally spoke. "The war is taking a turn, Miss (L/N), and it's not on our side." He chuckled dryly. "In fact," he stood up, looking outside towards the battlefield, "it's so bad that we might need to send more spies out."
This time your eyebrows furrowed. You understood what he meant but...
"Why are you telling me this, Sir?"
He still faced away from you when he answered. "As you probably know most of our spies have been captured and killed. But we desperately need a spy...a good spy I mean...to take on this certain mission."
You nodded your head even though he couldn't see you.
"This mission is to sneak into the camp of the enemy, find out as much information as possible, and kill their commander in chief." He said nonchalantly, as if this was an everyday saying for people like "Hello" and "Goodbye".
"A couple of my men and I decided we need to change tactics so-"
"Sir, I don't mean to interrupt, but what does any of this have to do with me?" You questioned.
At this he turns around and went to grab a glass to fill it with whiskey. "I'm getting to that, don't worry."
He filled his glass and took a sip before looking at you straight in the eyes."We decided we want a woman to sneak into the camp to kill George Washington."
