CHAPTER FIVE

Mark jumps up, his hands glowing. Kate squeals, and the air in front of her begins to shimmer. This isn't the first time we've had to use our abilities to protect ourselves, but we still don't like to.

Here we go guys, like we usually do, I say. The routine is that we all go silent, and I become the only means if communication. Then, I try to reason with whoever's there. Failing that, I link our minds so that our attacks become perfectly coordinated.

Who's there? I think, broadcasting the thought throughout the back room to find the person, who is.... There! I establish a link with the question. The reply utterly terrifies me.

You don't remember me, brother? The unknown person asks.

I could never forget. We're ready to attack at any moment, so don't get cocky.

We? You have friends?

Yes. What do you want? If it's a rematch, well... I wouldn't do that. The last people to get in my way simply disappeared.

You're still horrible at bluffing, brother.

Leave us alone, we were starting to be happy with our lives for once...

Were you?

No... Please no...

Can I come out and say hello?

The door opens, and out steps the one person who could be strong enough to defeat us.

My brother.

******************************************

Lythus steps out of the back room. A chill wafts out, as if to publicize my fear. I thought it was a pretty warm day, but Lythus found a way to make himself a walking snowman.

Lythus is a Scorcher. At least, that's the closest classification. He has wings, wings with scales that honestly look like they were taken from a dragon in one of those retro paintings. They kind of complete his look, actually. He also has claws on his fingers and toes, with scales on the outside of every single joint in his body. Knuckles, kneecap, you name it, there are scales. There are also random patches of scales all over his body. His face is actually pretty handsome. He has fire-red eyes, silver hair, and a perfect nose. His cheeks have always been slightly indented. His hair runs to his shoulders, and it actually shimmers. He's always shirtless. Even though it's because of his wings, it feels like he's just showing off his amazing body.

"Hello," he says in a perfectly smooth voice.

Gosh, I hate this guy.
