    CHAPTER 14

    Jack

I awake with a start and a shudder. The first thought to enter my mind involves my friends. All of them with a depressing, pitiful backstory. Kate's was interesting. Speaking of Kate, I've decided... She loves me. Well, awkward time for a love story.

Where am I? This looks like a hospital room, exactly how I would imagine it. Because I did imagine it. As I fainted, I felt something else faintly. It created this room from my memory. Everyone else is here, I know that. Jack gives me a black stare that tells me it hasn't been too long, but it's been a while.

A floating, wispy thing enters the room. It looks like many small, colored clouds, like nebulae, shifting and rearranging constantly. They behave strangely. One touches me, but I don't feel anything.

    Hello.

     Uh, hi, I cleverly blurt.

You're a long way from home. We've been watching you.

Who are you? What are you?

I am one of the Watchers. We make sure the universes don't go out in an untimely event. We sometimes push things forward a bit. We sometimes stop things as well. Oh, the things we saved your planet from to see the humans grow.

     So, what are you?

You wouldn't understand if we told you. It's like telling you what it would be like to be a ladybug. You have nothing to compare to. Let me say this: You are made of a lower form of matter. If you imagine levels of matter as rungs on a ladder, you cannot travel up from your original position, but you can travel down. Normally, you could not interact with higher forms of matter, or do things relating to the higher laws of matter than those that you know. This is what makes you special.

   Say what?

   We need your help.

But aren't you pretty much gods?

You could say that. However, even gods have limits. Will you hear our story?

     Sure.

Long ago, everything was in balance. We were happy, curious, and young. Eventually, we ran out of things to do. So, we hurried up the development of many lower life forms. We also toyed with them a bit, not realizing they were suffering. Eventually, a sentient form became angry and confused, and tried to attack us. Most of us realized then that we were causing more harm than good. However, there was a group of Watchers that treated these things like a game, torturing people or pitting entire races against each other in war. We chose never to take sides in battles that didn't involve us Watchers, because we can leave destruction in our wake. Eventually, we called the other group Dark Watchers for their evil tendencies and ourselves the Good Watchers for our selfless mindset.

    How does this involve me?

Patience. Because of the particular matter we are made of, we can only interact with matter on lower levels, and can't actually hurt each other. So, the Dark Watchers run rampant throughout existence. Recently, they have decided to interfere with humans, just as another Mutant Age began.

     Mutant Age?

Humans are peculiar creatures. Your DNA contains an activated gene that gives extraordinary powers to children when the world falls into disrepair. This time, it was triggered by aristocracy, environmental damage, and impending destruction. The Dark Watchers selected a powerful Mutant, and haunted him his entire life. He serves their purposes without realizing it. This is where you become important.

I can attack these Dark Watchers?

Yes. We cannot. I am very sorry to cause you trouble, but it should be beneficial to your species anyway.

Understood. Is it safe to go back home?

Yes. We sent them away and modified their memories and thoughts so they wouldn't come back. You and your friends must train in order to win.

     Why?

The Dark Watchers are in no way hesitant to use their abilities.

The wisp goes away, leaving an echo of... pity. A rushing sound fills my ears, and we're back home.

The grass and shrubs are so beautiful and green. Everything is deceptively calm. We are the world's last hope. We all walk inside our house, exhausted. As I open the door, the knob breaks off. Frustrated, I jam it back into its slot without thinking. The doorknob ripples, and changes into an ornate diamond knob. And it works.
