But time went by
And the boy grew older

As Dan grew he met girls and discovered "love". Like any other silly teenager every time he dated he thought he had found the one. He would take them on romantic dates in the forest in his backyard. The picnic cloth would be laid out with an iconic basket and fizzy soda. They would eat by his tree because it broadcasted the perfect romantic setting. For a romantic gesture he took out his pocket knife and carved their initials in the tree surrounded by a heart.

And the tree was often left alone.

Young teenage love is a mystery. But Dan figured that out sooner than others that love is a trap. After so many heartbreaks he gave up trying. Greedy girls took him for granted. They never actually loved him. He had never found any one who actually loved him. He never found anyone that he actually loved. The scariest thing about love is that your either going to dump them or marry them. From his perspective love leads to misery.

I guess he's just been looking in all the wrong places...

His depression got worse. The bullying got worse.
So he fell back onto is support and took a good book out to his tree. He followed the path he had made so long ago. He passed the small open field and went along the narrow dirt path. Many trees passed as he made his way to his special spot. The spot he had found as a young innocent child.

He ran his fingers over the markings he had carved into the tree. What a stupid decision it was to ruin a beautiful piece of nature with the cruelty of man. To think that he had vandalized his most sacred place in the name of some feigned romance. It made him sick to his stomach.
As he sat in resting spot up against the tree he looked up to see the beautiful night sky with stars covering it like a blanket. In moments like this Dan was happy to be alive but still longed for companionship. He watched a bright star fly across the sky and made a wish as if he was a young child again.

Little did Dan know his wish would have such a great affect.

As he read he realized that the tree was his only true friend that had been with him for it all. What a strange thought to have about a tree.

Hey guys! Sorry it was short but we're almost to the good stuff! Bye-bye!
