After a moment Marine let out a long sigh. I smiled and turned to her in curiosity.

"I just remembered my biology homework," she explained, "I should never have thought AP biology was a good idea."

I laughed, Marine was perhaps one of the smartest people I'd ever met, not only did she take AP Biology but also AP Physics and she was passing both with flying colors, not to mention all of her other classes.

"It's not funny, the teacher gives out so much homework. It's as if she forgets I take other subjects too," Marine groaned, glaring at me.

"But you're ace-ing it," I pointed out, raising my eyebrow.

She scoffed, "It's not that its hard to do, it's just a lot," she replied, shaking her head.

Marine's intelligence had always amazed me, prior to meeting her I thought I was smart. The only classes we used to have together were AP Physics and AP Biology, the memory of that class caused another to stir within me, I closed my eyes letting it wash over me.

I was sitting in the science classroom, pinching the bridge of my nose as I stared down at the test paper in front of me. I heard Marine sigh from beside me, "I really thought I'd do well this time."

I chuckled at her, "Me too."

She leaned against me softly, attempting to read my grade at the top of my sheet. Marine was wonderful but she'd always been a little nosey.

"Good job, that's a big improvement," She commented, pointing at the C- on my page, whilst simultaneously moving her other hand to cover up her grade, attempting to be subtle but I still noticed.

It was true I suppose, I was a D- student in this class but I knew Marine would've aced it. I nudged her hand gently to read her grade, I suppose I was pretty nosey too. I bit back a scoff when I saw her grade "I really thought I'd do well this time?" I asked incredulously.

She shook her head, biting her lip as I pointed at the A- on the page.

I turned away from her page with a small smile, I wasn't jealous of her intelligence but a passing grade would be nice. I shifted my papers pulling out the yellow course drop form from underneath the test paper. I quickly scrawled my name and details in the appropriate places, aware of Marine's eyes on me.

I dropped my pen back onto the table noisily once I'd finished and finally met Marine's incredulous gaze.

"You're dropping it?" She asked, prodding the paper in my hands with the end of her pen.

I nodded, "I'm failing, Marine."

She sighed but nodded in understanding. I pushed back my chair and walked toward the teacher's desk, placing my form down gingerly. Ma'am nodded understandingly, "Wise choice, Mr. Knols."

The memory faded as quickly as it came and before I knew it I was back in Marine's car whilst she continued to complain about her AP Biology homework.

"It's due on the tenth and today's the fourth, that's ridiculous. She can't —" Marine cut herself off with a gasp, slamming her hand down on the steering wheel.

I jumped at her outburst, leaning forward to inspect the road for a body of some kind.

"It's nearly your birthday!" She cried out, looking at me like she'd just admitted to the murder of my family.

I nodded, raising an eyebrow at her outburst and then letting out a sigh as she began rattling off ideas for how to celebrate.

My birthday was my least favorite day of the year.
