You'd recently been brought to the Glade, and you were the only girl there. Everyone was confused as to why you were the only girl there, as were you. It was your second day there, and after watching Minho and Thomas closely, you began to get bored of being a track-hoe. All you wanted was to be a runner, to get out of these four walls and run the maze. Everyday you'd see the runners, Minho and Thomas run in, puffed and sweaty, being congratulated by everyone and going straight towards the map-room. You wish that was you.

After dinner, you saw Minho, Newt, and Thomas all sat on a log talking amongst each other. Now was your chance, you thought. You walked up to the three boys and took this chance to finally let it be known you were up for the task to be a runner.

"Hey, Greenie," Newt spoke, causing the boys to all look up at you expectantly. "Something wrong?" He asked. You gulped and shook you head. Since you were the only girl, all the boys underestimated you a lot. They never wanted to give you the same work load as them, thinking you might get too tired. They always gave you more food, and never treated you the same. It annoyed you a lot, and you weren't going to have it anymore. Even though it had its advantages, in a place like these, you didn't want to stand out, you wanted to be treated the same.

"I want to be a runner." You blurted. You watched their faces anxiously, waiting to see their reaction. Newt smirked, and Minho bursted out laughing.

"You-you, want to be a runner?" Minho gasped, as he and Newt began laughing hysterically together.

"What's so funny?" You asked, looking at the boys with a sad expression on your face. Will they ever treat you with respect, just like the other boys? Thomas looked at them and nudged them slightly, though still hiding the smirk plastered on his own face.

"I'm sorry, it's just, you're a girl. Do you think you can actually be a runner with us?" Minho asked, making you raise your eyebrows in shock. The nerve!

"Shuck you guys." You spat out at them, turning around and storming away from there. You were breathing heavily, so angry at the disrespect they give you. You knew you were ready to be a runner, you were fitter than anything, strong, and fearless.

"Hey, hey," Thomas breathed out from behind you, running up to you to catch up. You stopped and looked at him, ready to deck him if he said anything else that got on your nerve. "I'm sorry about them. Really, I am. I know what it's like to get here, and feel confused. Scared. Lonely. I know what you're feeling," you shook your head and laughed humourlessly.

"You don't know how it feels to be the only girl in here." He licked his lips and nodded slowly, looking down to the ground.

"Okay. I'm sorry." He apologised. You took a deep breath in, ready to turn around and leave, feeling like this conversation was pointless. After a few moments, you turned your body, ready to leave but Thomas grabbed your wrist to turn you back.

"I'll help you." He said. You looked at him confused, wanting him to continue. "I'll convince the rest to give you a chance." A grin slowly spread across your face and you jumped in excitement, wrapping your arms around Thomas's neck.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you!" You cheered into his neck, still jumping up and down. He chuckled and pulled you off him, gaining is composure and turning serious once again.

"First thing tomorrow morning, Greenie. Don't be late and don't mess up." You nodded eagerly and ran back to your sleeping space, the excitement for tomorrow taking control over your whole body.

The next morning, and you were by the North Door with Thomas, waiting for the other runners. The nerves were kicking in, knowing you had to make a good first impression. You twitched your fingers repeatedly and jumped from your left foot to your right.

"Hey, calm down. You'll do fine. Just keep running and listen to what we say." Thomas said, seeing how nervous you were. You nodded and calmed down slightly from the instructions you'd been given.

"So I hear we have a girl joining us today." Minho said as he walked up to us.

"Go easy on her." Thomas said.

"I'll treat her as if she's just another runner." Minho said, which made me feel relieved inside.

"That's all I've wanted." I said, and Thomas looked down at me with a small smile on his face. The doors opened and the runners were here.

"Let's go!" Minho instructed, and we all began running. Little did I know, this was just the first of many runs to come, and I couldn't be more happier.
