Silence settled gently over the room, holding a lulling sense of calm, enveloping the exhausted Paladins of Voltron in a relaxing blanket of serenity.
Shiro had been attempting to use Pidge's triangulation software to plot possible Galra locations, but now he was slouched in his chair, his metal arm hanging lazily over the edge of the desk. His head was slowly slipping out of his other hand, which was currently propping it up. Hunk was beginning to snore, sprawled out on the couch, Pidge fast asleep beside him, her chin against her chest.
Lance was drifting in and out of sleep, upside down with his legs up on the couch, his arms behind his head, his music playing loudly in his ears. On the other side of the room, Keith was leaned against the wall, struggling to keep his eyes open. He let out a yawn, debating whether or not he should just go to his room and take a nap. Before he could make a decision, however, Allura's voice sounded in the room, shattering the glass of silence.
"Paladins to your stations! We've received a distress call from a nearby planet!"
Shiro's head slipped out of his hand, startled by the sudden noise, and collided with the desk. The Black Paladin got to his feet, rubbing his head with a grimace on his face as he raced towards the main deck. Keith was only a few paces behind, casting a glance over his shoulder to make sure the others had heard the call. Pidge was shaking Lance awake as Hunk scrambled to his feet to follow.
Within the next few minutes, the whole team was on deck, awaiting instructions and the rundown on the situation.
"This shouldn't be too difficult of a mission," the princess began once everyone was present. "The message said that they need help getting rid of the Galra tech on their planet."
Lance let out a yawn, stretching out his arms before crossing them over his chest again. This assignment already sounded boring.
"Apparently Zarkon used their world as a junkyard, dumping all of his weapon failures and malfunctioning systems there," Corran spoke from his location at the control panel. "Lately the tech has been a bit touchy, and it's been far too dangerous for the inhabitants to go anywhere near it. It's blocking the path to their water source, and they're worried that if something isn't done soon, things will only get worse."
Shiro glanced around at the tired, unenthused Paladins and gave them all a reassuring smile.
"Come on, guys. It won't be too hard. Besides, after this, I'm sure the Princess will let us rest for the night," he assured them. Allura pursed her lips for a moment before sighing and nodding.
"You all have worked hard the past few days. After this assignment, you'll have definitely earned some rest," she agreed. The team seemed to brighten up slightly at the promise of sleep.
"Then what are we waiting for? Let's go get started!" Pidge exclaimed, to the approval of her friends.
"The planet is just up ahead. We will be unable to land the ship, so you five will have to go on your lions," Corran instructed them. "The Princess will be going with you for diplomatic reasons. I'll stay on the ship in case the Galra come by for another dump."
The team nodded collectively and ran to their lions, securing their armor as they went. Allura tagged along with Shiro, holding on to the back of his chair as the Black Lion launched into space, quickly followed by the other four. They flew in loose formation, the only chatter over the comlink the occasional yawn or sigh.
Back at the castle, Corran was monitoring their course, and listening in to the com. Upon finding that nothing interesting was happening, he frowned and crossed his arms, absentmindedly twiddling with his mustache. He couldn't help but feel that maybe this mission was too easy. Even a garbage dump should have a few Galra soldiers, should it not? Zarkon with wouldn't be foolish enough to leave scrap and potential weapons for anyone to grab.
He voiced his concern to the others, and they took a moment to consider it.
"It could be that everything here really is useless," Shiro guessed. Lance let out a groan.
"That would mean this mission really is pointless and boring after all," he complained. Keith frowned at him.
"We can't pick and choose, Lance. We have to help everyone, even if it is just moving trash," he reprimanded. Lance stuck his tongue out at him, though he knew the Red Paladin couldn't see him.
"Your selflessness knows no bounds, Mullet Boy," Lance cooed, his voice dripping with satire. Keith glowered, his hands tightening around the controls for a moment.
"Keep talking, cargo pilot, and I'll drag you up your ego and drop you down to your IQ," he snarled. Lance was about to retaliate when Shiro's voice interrupted them.
"Shut it, you two! We're all tired, we're all stressed. The last thing we need is your constant bickering in our ears!" Silence fell across the group, tense and uncomfortable, as Shiro took a moment to collect himself.
"Look, the sooner we cooperate and get this over with, the sooner we can go back and rest, alright?" Lance and Keith grudgingly agreed and the team went silent again for the rest of the trip. Shiro sighed, shaking his head slightly.
Just when they thought those two had settled their differences and would work together... they pulled something like that. He couldn't understand why their rivalry held so strong despite everything the team had been through together. Hopefully they could come to an agreement before it got somebody hurt...
A/N: Alright, so obviously this takes place before the Season 2 finale. Also... it's probably too late for this, but spoilers! Haha! I hope you like it so far, this is my first Voltron/Klance thing I've done. (I think it's funny though, that I'm posting this on Valentine's Day XD) Anyway, I'll howl to you later!!
