I guess I started realizing I wasn't special after a statewide competition for life skills. My team got third place, I got an individual award for my category, and sponsors gave us a lot of swag. All in all, it was a pretty average Asian overachieving day. It was after the competition that got to me. I was a sixteen year old without a license so I was subjected to waiting for my parents to pick me up. A discussion with my teacher was taking longer than usual and I had to abruptly leave when my phone rang not once but twice. I was brandishing my free swag in recyclable bags but what I received when I got in the car was not praise nor glory nor appreciation but irritation. I was late; well making them late and in trouble with the guard in the post at the entrance.
