Chapter 3: Newspaper Clippings

Steve and Diana immediately began proposing ideas as to how they could catch Chase in the act without him suspecting it and also without letting the bridge blow up.

They contacted the IADC and asked for all the information they had on Mcguire. He was a senior police officer, he had received about a dozen medals of honor, and he was about to retire. They researched where Mcguire had earned those medals. "Steve, I think you might wanna take a look at this." Diana called from the couch as they both sifted through old newspaper clippings that had been faxed to them.

"It says here: 'Frank McGuire vindicated after courageous acts involved in smugglers syndicate. In the late hours of Thursday evening, officer Frank McGuire and his team tracked down the last remaining members of the infamous smuggling operation known as the RED CIRCLE. It's leaders, Joseph Grange, Kenneth Chase, and Amanda Harrows have been taken into custody and are accused of the nasty triple murder of Detective Peter Wallis and his family. It was previously brlieved that McGuire himself was responsible for the killings until new evidence came to light. Details are as yet unknown.'"

Steve furrowed his brow. "Okay. So McGuire arrests Kenneth Chase on suspicion of drug smuggling and- How long ago was this?"

"This paper is dated May 11th, 1977. That's almost 3 years ago." She reached and took a sip of her coffee.

"So about the same time he was discharged. What was the outcome of the trial?" Steve's hands were under his chin and he was leaning forward in his chair.

"Let me see". Diana pushed up her glasses and skimmed through her stack of papers. "Ah! Here it is! 'KENNETH CHASE CONFESSES TO WALLIS FAMILY MURDERS: In a shocking revelation, Kenneth Chase has confessed to killing Detective Peter Wallis, his wife Martha Wallis, and their 7 year old son Josh. This was quite the shock to whole court. Evidence had been piling up against Amanda Harrows, but Chase swears that he did it and that Harrows is innocent of all wrong doing, including the smuggling charges that are hanging over her head. Kenneth has been charged with the death penalty and Joshua Grange has been charged with 15 years for smuggling and armed robbery. Amanda Harrows will serve six months for accessory to the robbery. Sgt. Samuel Chase attempted to negotiate the release of his son, but was denied.'"

"Well that's something!" He exclaimed as he leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms.

"Yes it is! And then it says that Evelyn Chase killed herself not long after Kenneth died."

"So Chase goes on to threaten the whole force and now he has a vendetta against McGuire. But it still doesn't explain why he sent his goons to kidnap me and demand ransom money. It's not like Chase is hurting for cash and why draw the attention of the IADC?"

"I don't know, Steve. I think there's more to this than meets the eye." She stood and walked towards the phone. "But one thing is for sure, we need to stop the parade. We don't have the whole picture yet."

Steve nodded. "You're the boss."
