First Encounters

The first time Phil saw the reaper was when he was about the age of 15. He was sitting on his bed, watching Buffy the vampire slayer on the television when, suddenly, a beautiful girl, clad in black, slid inside the room through the open window.

Before he even realised she was there, the girl took a deep breath and complained rather loudly "Death almighty! Why do I always have to do these things? It's not like humans can even see us; I bet the boss is just bored of collecting the souls of people's hamsters... Safety rules, who does he think he's kidding? He's just exploiting the fact that he's got a higher position than me."

Phil held his breath and tried his hardest to keep his eyes on the screen and away from the mysterious girl, trusting the fact that the intruder was, apparently, under the impression that she was invisible to him. However, using his peripheral vision, he stole some glances of the girl who was now casually snooping around his bedroom.

She had long, black curls and red side cuts on each side of her head. That haircut, combined with her smudged makeup, made her look beautiful in a terrifying manner. Her black jeans were torn, she had a pair of petrol boots on and, beneath a leather jacket, she wore a T-shirt which read 'I came. I saw. I made it awkward.', in bold pink letters. On her hand she held, much to Phil's horror, a reaper's scythe, worthy of all the myths surrounding it.

All of a sudden, the girl's eyes widened and with a devilish smile plastered on her face she started walking in Phil's direction. The young boy was overwhelmed by terror, almost certain that he had been discovered, his hands started trembling and he could feel his heart beating as loud as a bass drum.

Then, the girl stopped moving, leaned over and scooped something from the floor, only to get up again, with Phil's pet hamster held tightly in her grip.

"Hello there, little buddy." She said in a soothing voice, her expression turning from a mischievous to a softer one in a split second.
"As much as I hate to break it to you, I'm afraid it's time to go." She then placed her scythe gently on the small rodent's neck and by giving it a slight push; she separated the hamster's body from a shiny, essence that Phil guessed to be its soul.

Phil tried to hold back his tears, as the now lifeless body hit the floor with a soft thud, allowing them to fall warm on his cheeks only after girl had turned her back to him, heading to the window with the tiny soul snuggled in the palm of her left hand.

And as the boy wept for his lost friend, the reaper stepped on the window sill and with a small jump she disappeared in the night, without leaving any traces or proof of her existence.
