"Kokoooo!" I heard Cali yelling in my ear as she continued to shake me. "Wake up Koko!" I felt her breath hit my face.
I opened my eyes "I'm up Cali, what is it?" I stretched still laying flat on my back.
Truth is, I woken up earlier this morning by Julio with some bomb ass head which put me right back to sleep.
"It's Valentines Day!" She shouted with excitement. "Daddy gave me a bear, some flowers, earrings, and chocolate but he said I can't eat any until I get home from school."
I chuckled "That's sweet of him Cali."
"Yeah, what'd he get you?"
Head
"I'm not sure yet." I yawned. "He'll probably show me later."
She sat on the edge of the bed "I got you something." She pulled out a Manila piece of construction paper. "It got kind of crumbled in my backpack yesterday." She handed it to me.
I smiled "Aww, what is this?" I opened it.
I stared at it in awe, biting my bottom lip to keep myself from getting emotional. It may not mean a lot to her real one, but her calling me mommy meant everything to me.
She pointed "See those are my hands, a-and my teacher wrote the words but I told her what to write." She smiled. "I put the stickers on there too."
I sniffed still staring at it. When I was a little kid I also made cards and such for my dad on holidays, but being the alcoholic, cruel parent he was he would laugh and tear them up in my face. It broke my heart, every time I would make the card with more stickers, or more glitter hoping he would like it enough to keep it but of course he never did. I vowed to myself I'd never be that type of parent and although Cali isn't my biological child, I planned to treat her like she was.
"Do you like it?" She asked hesitantly looking at me.
I smiled, nodding. I pulled her into a hug "I love it Cali. Thank you."
She kissed my cheek "You're welcome." She pulled away looking like something was on her mind.
"What's wrong?"
She hesitated again "Can I call you mommy?"
"I have no problem with that Cali." I sniffed feeling myself getting emotional again.
"Good because I asked Daddy and he said to ask you." She spoke looking at me.
I laughed "Well I'm glad you asked me and by the way, I like your outfit."
She smiled "Thank you."
