For a long moment, it is far too silent for my liking as Amelia looks between Officer Mitchell and I, her expression full of surprise and something that looks a lot like a smirk. I can feel myself blushing, and focus my eyes on the floor of Amelia's dining room to hide it. I really hope Officer Mitchell can't see me blushing, but I'm afraid he definitely can.

"I wouldn't say we know each other, because we really only spoke for a few minutes. I had to pull her over for speeding right before my shift ended," Officer Mitchell replies smoothly, seemingly unaffected by the awkwardness of the situation.

Amelia lets out a chuckle. "Oh, I should've known. I hope you set her straight, speeding is dangerous," She says with a grin before turning to me. "Anyway, this is Greg's best friend and the best man in the wedding. I hope you like each other, because you'll probably be spending a lot of time together." And then she walks back to the rest of the guests, but not before winking at me. Sometimes, I really don't understand her.

I immediately turn to Officer Mitchell once Amelia is out of earshot. "So you knew I was Amelia's sister when you pulled me over."

He looks at me, a look of confusion turning into a look of understanding. "No, no, when I first pulled you over, I didn't know whether you were a man or a woman, all I knew was I just clocked you at seventy in a fifty zone. I didn't realize until I saw your last name on your license, and even then I wasn't sure if you were really Amelia's sister or if it was a coincidence."

"Oh," I say, embarrassed. I turn away so he can't see the blush that's overtaking my face right now. But then I let a grin spread across my face and turn towards him once more, deciding to try and be confident and flirty like him. "You must be glad to see me again, especially since you didn't have to pull me over this time, Officer Mitchell."

"First off, you only have to call me Officer Mitchell when I'm in uniform. My name is actually Chris," He lets out a chuckle and a flirtatious smile crosses over his face. "And second off, yes I am especially glad that we're meeting again under these circumstances. Hopefully you learned your lesson about breaking the law."

"So even out of uniform you enforce the law?" I ask with a giggle. "You should take a break once in a while. Following the rules is boring."

He raises his eyebrows at me and smiles. "Of course I do. I never know when I might need to help somebody."

His words pique my curiosity, and I can't help myself from trying to learn more. "Is that why you're a cop? So you can help people?"

"To make the long story short, yes. And I would love to tell you the whole story, but it seems we're going to have to save it for another time. Looks like your sister wants us over there, Cromwell, Alexandria Marie," He says, gesturing behind us, where Amelia is beckoning to us; she seems to be ready for dinner. Truthfully, I would have loved to hear him tell the story. His eyes got such a brilliant shine in them when he was talking, and I can tell he really loves his job. And he has a voice like honey and sugar, one that I wouldn't mind listening to all day.

I smile and try to hide the blush on my cheeks. "It's Alex, by the way. You don't have to keep calling me by my full name."

To my surprise, Chris smiles a genuine smile; even though he's looking towards Amelia and the dinner and not at me, I can still see it. "I'll keep that in mind, darling."

We reach Amelia and she smiles at us. "Okay, so we have sort-of-assigned seats for tonight. Obviously Greg and I are sitting next to each other, and then I want Alex and Chris to sit together across from us, and then Deb, you sit on the other side of Alex and the rest of you girls fill in next her, and boys, you fill in on the other side of Chris. Is that okay with everyone?" Amelia explains with a smile. I catch her quickly flashing me smirk before taking her seat at the table.
