Chapter 3
“What?” I stood up abruptly. The room was deadly silent.
“You heard me! We are to be married! I’ve even had three dresses made for you to choose from!” The room exploded into whispers once Daddy said this.
“But, but, Daddy! I can’t marry you! It’s forbidden!”
“Says who?! No one here has the authority to punish me!” This isn’t right! I don’t want to marry my father! My head was spinning. I needed air.
Once in the gardens, hidden, in the maze of walls and walls of roses, I could think clearly.
I can’t marry him! I can’t marry my own father! I can’t, and I won’t! But why?! Why does he want to marry me!? Me! His own flesh and blood! Tears were pooling in my eyes, threatening to overflow and run down my face.
Footsteps could be heard, and I quickly blinked away my tears. Rosetta appeared from behind a wall of white roses. She was crying.
“I refuse to marry him Rosetta!”
“I know sweetie, I know. Everyone knows.” Rosetta sat beside me, resting my head on her shoulder.
“If everyone knows, why doesn’t Daddy!?” I was mad now and I stomped my foot in anger, not understanding what had possessed my own father to want to marry his only daughter.
“Sweetie,” Rosetta pulled my wrist softly, making me sit down again. “Your father always gets what he wants, and right now, he wants to marry you.”
“But I refuse to marry him!”
“Your father will marry you whether you want him to or not, you of all people should know this by now.” Rosetta was right. If Daddy could manage to kill an entire army with only one soldier, it couldn’t be that hard to marry someone against their will.
“I refuse to marry him and he won’t give up! There has to be another decision!”
