Tip 1) Details are EVERYTHING!

Details are what make the story, the core of the story. People are more apt to read a detailed sentence than a first graders sentence.

Example 1: The boy in the black hood could only hear the crunch of feet on the leafy grass and the crickets of the silent night.

Example 2: The boy ran through the woods.

If those were both openings of a story which would you chose? 1 obviously. It's more descriptive and you can see what's going on in and where he is. 2 you just see a boy running through a forest leaving you to imagine what's going on. Which is a good thing but not in the case of a story.
