"Well, that was officially epic!"

Craig laughed as he took off his helmet and plopped down on the bench next to me. The game had just finished. He was the quarterback and had thrown an amazing touchdown pass in the last 10 seconds to put seven more points on the scoreboard.

"Thanks, but if it wasn't for Jeff, we'd all be hauling our sorry butts home with a loss on our tail," he replied. Jeff, the team's wide receiver and one of my good friends, was the receiver of the incredible pass.

"I think everyone did great," I said. "It was a team effort."

"Pretty much," Craig agreed. "Say, why don't you play?"

"I missed the tryouts," I replied. Craig played in a co-ed football league from spring to early summer. I had wanted to play, but I couldn't make the tryouts.

"You should play," Craig suggested. "You'd be good."

"At what position?" I asked. "I'm tiny. If I got tackled I'd be crushed."

"Wide receiver," Craig replied. "You'd be great. You can outrun almost anyone. Just run a touchdown every pass and you won't be tackled."

"Oh, thanks. No pressure, right," I muttered. Craig laughed.

"What was that call about at halftime?" he asked as he mounted his bike.

"Chief Hampton," I replied. "Burns escaped from police custody."

"How?"he questioned.

"He didn't say," I answered.

"Weird," Craig murmured. "Did he say when?"

"Yesterday at like two-ish," I said.

"You heard anything from Kai or Analu?" Craig questioned.

I shook my head. "No."

Suddenly, my phone started ringing. I pulled it out. It was from a number I didn't recognize. "You recognize the number?"

Craig took one look at my screen. "Am I supposed to?"

I shrugged. "I don't know who it is."

"Maybe it's Kai or Analu," Craig suggested.

"One way to find out," I replied. "Hello?"

There was silence on the other end of the line.Craig and I looked at each other with puzzled looks. What was going on?

"Anyone there?" I asked. There was no response.

"Who is it?" Craig questioned.

"I don't know," I admitted, about to press the hang up button. "Probably just--"

"Macky, wait! It's me!"

"Steve!" I exclaimed. "Oh my gosh, are you alright? Is everyone okay? Where's dad? Where are you guys? Wh--"

"Macky, just wait," Steve said on a hushed tone. "Stevenson is gonna come back any minute now. I can't talk for very long. Yes, everyone's okay. A little tired and hungry, but we're okay."

"Okay good," I replied. "Where are you guys?"

"I'm not sure," he admitted. "We were some place east of San Francisco, but they put us in a van and we started driving south. We're in another base now. Macky, listen to me. We'll be okay. What you need to do is get out of San Francisco."
