Chapter 1
I quickly jumped out of my desk and ran to my locker when the bell rang, annoucing the end of the school day. When I got to my locker, I put in my combination and opened it, exchanging my history book for my math book, and setting it in my bag. My best friend, Ariel, came up beside me and tapped me on the shoulder.
"Hey, don't look now, but he's coming your way." She whispered in my ear. I felt my face getting all red and hot, knowing who she was talking about. I was in love with my best friend, Houston. He was amazing. Everything about him, his looks, his personality, and I was lucky enough to be called his best friend. However, he had a girlfriend and I don't think he has ever thought of me as more than his best friend. I loved him, he was my everything. And he loved me, but only as a friend. I knew he had arrived before he spoke, because my heart started beating faster.
"Hey, cowgirl," he said to me with a smile. He always called me cowgirl, because I was his "little country girl" as he put it. I was quite the cowgirl, if I do say so myself. I was a barrel racer, and he was always practicing with me, him being a bareback rider. I blushed as I looked down at my jeans and cowgirl boots.
"Oh, quit it, Houston." I replied with a playful smile. My smile slowly faded, however, as I saw Houston's girlfriend, Melanie, walk up. She glared at me and threw herself at Houston, who greeted her with a huge grin. I could feel Ariel gripping my arm behind me, trying to drag me away, but I just stood there like a complete idiot.
"Hey, baby," she said after she pulled away from him. I couldn't stand watching it, so I quietly muttered to myself, "Bye, Houston," so quiet that I doubt he heard me. I walked away with Ariel who told me not to worry about it.
"Don't sweat it, Juliet. Someday, he will realize how in love with you he is and not that bratty tramp. I mean, just look at her. She's all over him!" She said with some anger in her voice. When she mentioned Melanie being all over him, my stomache got a really sick feeling.
"Um, I'd rather not look." I mumbled. Ariel gave me an apologetic smile and I just shrugged. I was used to it, being the one left broken hearted. I hadn't moved on, because I had still felt maybe there was some hope. And everyday, I was proved more and more wrong.
