"Dude, what the hell happened in bio today?"
"Please don't call me 'dude', okay, Jackson..."
"Sure, whatever."
Jackson was my pal. We had known each other since grade school. It might have been odd to hang around a guy for so long without him asking me out, but hey, I liked my current relationship with him.
"You never told me what happened." He kept pushing.
"Alright fine, a blacked our for a second, and when I came to, the teacher was standing over me with a worried look on his face. Why?"
"I think you did a little more than just 'black out'. You closed your eyes for two seconds and then there was a loud bang from your desk and when we all looked back, you had passed out and hit your head on the desk. Even worse, when you looked up and opened your eyes, they had a milky-like coating over them, like you had died or gone blind or something."
Those last words sent a shudder through my body. "Are you sure you weren't hallucinating, Jackson?"
"I'm sure as hell that I wasn't hallucinating. The whole class saw it, and after that, Professor Whats His Name told me to take you home since I knew where you lived. Besides, the school tried calling your mom but she didn't answer."
Those were the last words spoken during that car ride home. We both stayed silent and didn't ask any questions, even Jackson's regular radio station was turned off. It felt awkward without Bon Jovi or some other person singing in the background.
When Jackson walked me to my front door and made sure I got inside, the first thing I did was flop on the couch. I wasn't going to do anything today. I felt completely normal besides the throbbing headache from hitting my head against that desk.
I had the lights turned off and the fan turned on high. I had stripped off my shirt and laid in my tank top. My brain told me to put on shorts or something like that, but ended up not moving at all. My headache had increased and I was sweating a lot.
My hair was sticking to my face and it felt like the heat had been turned up all the way. I had to do something. I looked at the clock in the kitchen. 9:30 AM... Mom probably wouldn't be home until 6 like always. I stripped my jeans and tank top and laid in my underwear and bra. It would have been more awkward if my mother or father had been home, but dad was on a business trip for a week or so.
I stared at the ceiling fan as sweat poured down my forehead. It was freezing in the house, but I was burning up and I had already checked to see if I had a fever. I was perfectly normal. There was no way I would be able to sleep. I couldn't get comfortable enough to fall asleep, and I feared if I did, I would end up dying. Even though my headache hadn't gotten better, I needed some sort of noise in the room and the fan blades weren't working out for me.
I sat up, wiped the sweat off my head and pushed my hair back, and reached for the remote. My vision was blurry and it took a few tries to get the remote, but I prevailed and turned it on, not caring what was on the TV. I laid back down and closed my eyes. Little to my surprise, the news was the channel that had made its appearance.
I listened as the woman on the TV screen gave the traffic reports and the weather for the week. It was supposed to be cloudy all week with a chance of rain for Friday and Saturday, and today was only Monday. I wouldn't mind having the soft patter of the rain against the roof top right now. It might actually help calm my nerves.
But, because of my luck, today was Monday and not Friday or Saturday. So, I had to suffer with the lady's monotone voice as she still gave the traffic reports. I was almost asleep when the amber alert noise came from the TV. I opened my eyes and looked at it. Sure enough, another teenager had vanished, but this time they had a suspect.
The person who had been seen with the teenager had short brown hair and pale skin. He had been wearing a blue tee-shirt and jeans. He looked like a normal bystander, except the fact that surveillance had seen him shove a kid in the back of his van and drive off. The van had no license plate, which was no help at all.
But what caught my attention was the black creature in the back of the van, waiting patiently for the man to shove the poor kid in. It was blurry in the photo, and even blurrier because of my poor vision, but I knew what it was. It was the thing that had bitten those teens.
I didn't feel like watching the rest so I pressed the record button on the remote and recorded the news so I could watch it when I felt a little better. I turned down the volume, closed my eyes, and tried to get even the slightest amount of sleep while I could.
I sat in the darkness of what was to become my dream. It didn't look like much, but even silence has powerful words. Soon, I found myself at the school yard. It looked like a normal school day. Kids were everywhere, exchanging gossip and other news. There was a lot of talk about the finals in math and social studies. Many kids were boasting how they were going to pass and get in the honors classes for next year.
I found myself sitting down on a bench by the parking lot and not paying attention to much of anything. This felt odd to me. Noting had happened, and nothing seemed off. I opened a book and started to read it. It was a children's book, the one's that show kids how to act and behave around other people. But the story changed from the one I had known,
There was a kid wearing all black with extremely pale skin and black hair. He was mistreated and abused by the other students and kids around him, and teachers didn't do anything, they just watched. Soon, the kid became a demon and hurt the kids around him, something the book said he never did. I finished the book, and the way it ended scared me.
The kid became an animal with glowing yellow eyes and returned to attack the kids who attacked him..by biting them.
I set the book down. I had never heard of this story. My thoughts were cut off by a strange noise coming from behind me. I turned my head around and saw the same creature from the book. The black animal with glowing yellow eyes. It didn't really have a figure, it was more of a blob...
The black animal came up to me and looked at me. It looked like it had sorrow in its eyes. I reached out to pet it, and the sorrow faded and at gave a cold, hard stare before biting my hand.
