That sound. It's hypnotic and captivating and unlike anything else. A melody that can not be mistaken for anything else. The hum that fills my ears always calms my nerves. The sound of life going on all around me, fast, slow, happily, full of sorrow, crazy and colourful or black and white, it's different for everyone and somehow all melds together into this beautiful sound that is life.
I often find myself aimlessly walking around the streets of the city or even around the HQ just soaking up the atmosphere, the energy, the sounds and smells all around me. I don't know when I started this little ritual but every time I need to clear my head I go for a walk and just let my mind wander to places usually considered useless or a waste of time by most people. Like who was the first person to decide putting rennet into milk would make the most wonderful creation, cheese, or who thought about drying leaves from a particular plant and soaking them in hot water would make a beverage that most people are quite fond of. Oh and why is it so comforting to have trees and plants in ones place of residence? I know, I know, not really relevant to my job and I don't really need to know but it nice to set my mind free every once in a while and not think about the Survey Corps, Titans or my inevitable death.
I had not been able to take a walk in over 2 weeks because I was confined to the infirmary after a particularly horrific expedition and I was now almost at my breaking point.
I had been given a squad of my own just six months ago and we were an amazing team until the last exposition beyond the walls. I lost my whole team and I almost lost my life as well. We were ambushed on the way home by three 15m Titans and my team was in charge of taking them out so the rest of the formation could make it to the walls. We managed to take out two fairly quickly but the third one just ripped through my team like we were rookies and we were far from that. I had a very strong team and we often trained with Squad Levi as we were the only ones to give them a run for their money.
That last Titan, an abnormal, had killed my team and I was so filled with rage I didn't notice how badly injured I was. I had a deep laceration that ran across my abdomen that was bleeding quite badly and I had at least a few broken ribs from being grabbed by one of the earlier Titans. Luckily one of my team sliced its nape just in time. Ignoring my injuries I hacked and sliced at this last Titan that had taken my team, friends, and the closest thing I had to family, away from me. I finally took it out and collapsed on the ground from exhaustion and blood loss. I vaguely remember someone calling my name as I fell to the ground. I woke up a week later in the infirmary and spent the following week confined here recovering.
I had lots of visitors while I have been stuck in here and they have been trying very hard to cheer me up but I just felt hollow, empty and numb. I tried to put on a smile and tell everyone I was doing fine but all I wanted to do was run as far away as possible. Captain Levi was the one that surprised me the most. He would visit me every day, usually after dinner, and he would bring me a cup of tea. Sometime we would just chat about the Survey Corps and all the paperwork or how the new recruits were going and sometimes we would just sit in comfortable silence. I swear this was the only thing that kept me from completely breaking. I had not cried for my team, my family, I couldn't all I could feel was numb.
I need to get out of this bed and go for a walk to clear my head. I woke up early today and I could hear the birds waking up as the sun was just peaking up above the horizon. This was my chance. The nurse won't check on me for an hour or so, so I can sneak out for a walk before breakfast. I swing my legs out of the bed letting them hit the cold surface of the floor. I slowly tried to stand up, pain coursing through my abdomen where my wound had been stitched up. Feeling a little dizzy I steady myself on the bedside table with my right hand and holding my head with my left. Thankfully the room stops spinning and I can let go of the bedside table. I grab some track pants, singlet top and some fresh underwear from the draw and very carefully get changed making sure not to bust open any of my stitches or move my healing ribs too much.
