The only thing anyone could hear was the ticking of the clock. Even though it was only a few minutes left of class, it felt like an eternity. We had all been waiting for the last day of school forever. And now it was finally here.
Summer was everyone's time off. Just to relax and do whatever. Almost everyone was looking forward to summer break because of the parties, Cindy's parties. Cindy was the most popular girl in school. She was a pretty blonde surprisingly smart girl. She's also been my best friend since second grade.
We're inseparable. Practically connected at the hip. That's why this summer I invited her to come to our cabin again. She came last year but she said she had these really strange feelings. Like something or someone was watching her. But this is something she says maybe once or twice a week. She was one of those people that could sense negative energy or whatever, or so she claimed.
It was a few times that she was right. Like whenever I would go to her house strange things would happen but, stuff like that would always happen to me. Even those things would occur often, she still didn't convince me because... Spirits? Really?
Once the clock hit 4:00 everyone bolted out of the classroom except for Cindy and I. We actually stayed behind to say goodbye to Ms. Henry unlike everyone else. After we said our good-byes we headed to our lockers before my dad picked us up.
"Can you open my locker Heather?" Cindy asked. She wasn't very good at opening her locker for some reason.
When we got outside my dad honked at us to let us know he was here. We hopped in the car and started to drive to Cindy's house. We started talking about everything we wanted to do this summer besides going to the cabin. My dad didn't say much. He just sat there watching the road. Then out of nowhere he asks Cindy if she was excited about the cabin again.
"Well Mr. Quinn I had this strange feeling when I was there... Well never mind but I'm really excited." she responded.
After we dropped Cindy off my dad started talking up a storm. He asked how my day was, if my grades we better, and basically just school stuff. My dad was really distant. Even though we lived together, ate together and rode in the car together almost everyday. He doesn't ask me about personal stuff like boyfriends. That's just my mom's job I guess.

When he and I got home he remembered what Cindy said in the car and asked what I knew what she was talking about."Cindy always has a strange feeling about something. I wouldn't really think much of it."
He chuckled and left the room to go to the kitchen.
"Hey sweetie!"
My mom said when she walked through the door. "I have a surprise for you and I think you're going to love it,"
"What is it?" I asked out of much curiosity."Your cousin Diane is coming with us to the cabin."
My face fell to the floor out of shock.
"Diane? Why is she coming with us?"
"Well, aunt Grace and her new husband are finally going on their honeymoon. She didn't know who Diane could stay with so she asked me. Grace is bringing her tomorrow morning."
I didn't want Diane to come. She was a bratty 13 year old who always got her way. And if I didn't do what she wanted, she'd annoy me to the point where I'd want to scream.
After my mom told me my "surprise", I went upstairs to my room so I could talk to Christopher. He was a light skinned curly haired boy with the prettiest eyes you've ever seen. He was my guy best friend. I kinda liked him but was was afraid he wouldn't feel the same way.
We talked on the phone occasionally. It wasn't like everyday though. Maybe once a week or so. Our conversations were really entertaining to me. All we really talked about was who we like and drama. It usually would take my mind off things.
"Heather dinner's ready!" My mom yelled to me from downstairs in the kitchen. I ran downstairs and smelled chicken parmesan. When I walked through the kitchen I saw my mom had already set the table and my dad was at the very end with my mom right next to him. I sat down directly in front of my mom so we could all talk.
"What were you doing in your room Heather?" My dad asked.
"Oh, I was just on the phone with Christopher."
My mom and dad loved Christopher. I don't think they knew I liked him though.
"Christopher is such a delightful young man. Why don't you invite him over anymore?"
I had to think about what to say for a moment.
"Well we just grew apart ever since he got that girlfriend of his. We don't talk as much."
I may have said it with a jealous tone, but I wasn't though. I was just disappointed that we don't talk anymore.
"Well let me stop pestering you about Christopher. I know it's probably uncomfortable for you to talk about him."
I wasn't sure why my dad thought it was uncomfortable for me. But I didn't pay it any mind. I just sat there eating my food.
Dinner got weird so no one really talked. We just sat there staring at our plates rolling our peas with the forks. I guess my mom got tired of the silence so she brought up having Diane over.
"Well, Heather you must be excited to see Diane huh?"
"I'm everything but excited." I mumbled under my breath.I kinda got tired of the questions and asked to be excused. I went up to my bedroom and called Cindy. I told her that Diane was coming with us and she wasn't very happy about that. She didn't like her because she was always bothering her about nothing. She would just annoy her every time they would see each other.
When Cindy hung up the phone I took a shower and climbed into bed. I got bored so I turned on the TV. To my surprise there was absolutely nothing interesting on to watch so I turned it off. Not that much later I drifted off into a deep sleep like a bear in hibernation.
Author's note: So this is my first book and if people like it I will write a new chapter at least every week or two😊
