Finally, Mr Newton decided that I wasn't worth wasting anymore of his breath over. He exited the little white room but not before leaving behind a "I love chess" business card just in case I changed my mind about his proposal. The address this program just happen to be held was off campus, in fact it was on Perkins right around the corner from Barnwell, a street down the way from my house. I decided to keep the card for some reason. Maybe because some ridiculous part of me wanted to show up and see what this whole foolishness was about or maybe I just wanted to show the card to Sasha when I got home, so both of us could have a good laugh. I wasn't really sure. Anyway, I slid the piece of paper in my pocket.
He told me to sit tight and someone would escort me to study hall which would be my official home until the end of the day. When he opened the door to leave I could see into the other little white room, directly across the hall, which just happen to be a clone of the one I was currently in. There, sitting at a desk, just like me, in front of a computer just like me, was a girl who didn't much look like she was in her room for the same reasons I was in mine. When you get in trouble as much as me you eventually come to know the look and this girl didn't have the look of a troubled student. She looked almost as if she wanted to be there, like she was waiting for someone for some reason. It suddenly occurred to me that maybe these rooms weren't just used as holding cells for ass holes like me.
Mr. Newton neglected to close the door behind him, so my open door and her open door, meant the way too no narrow hallway was currently the only barrier between us. We were close enough that I could smell her perfume permeating through the air. She was a slim brown skinned girl-cute- with leggings so tight they damn near seemed painted on and hair pulled back in a hastily made ponytail.
We both sat in our respective chairs, silent, trying to pretend like one person didn't notice the other just 7 to 8 feet away. We were like two strangers sitting next to each other on an empty bus, both feeling an urge to talk to each other and lack of comfort to talk to each other at the same time. After a while, the silence became so awkward that it seemed to make more sense to start a conversation than not to. She was the first one to voluntarily lose the silent game we had going.
"Trying to set a new fashion trend?" she asked with a teasing smile.
At first her question confused me, until she motioned down to my ripped to shreds shirt.
"Oh this? Long story"
"Well you don't look like you have anywhere to be any time soon."
"Good point" I admitted then said
"Well let's just say this is what happens when you get in a fight with three cousins."
"You got in a fight with your own cousins?"
"Nooo...they aren't my cousins. All three of them were cousins...like related."
"Oh my bad. So I guess it's safe to say you didn't win your fight with these three cousins. And don't gimme that ole 'If you think I look bad you should see them' bullshit either."
"Well....you really should see them". I said in defense.
"So what was so important that you decided to pick a fight with three dudes at the same time?"
