8 months later
I woke up and laid in my bed for a while. I didn't move, I didn't want to. I can't believe Kota has been gone for 2 years now. I got myself to roll out of bed and go downstairs for breakfast.
"Morning Jason" Alison gave the girls breakfast.
"Morning" I greeted sadly.
"How are you feeling?" Alison asked me
"Um, better than last year" I told her.
"Why are you sad daddy?" Lucy asked
"Because two years ago today, mommy died" Gracie answered.
"Oh, can you tell us about her?" Lucy asked as she looked at me and Ali.
"No, I don't think so, come get ready for school" I told them. They got dressed and got their backpacks. Alison and I walked the girls to the bus stop and they left.
"Jason, they deserve to know about Kota"Alison insisted.
"I know they do, but I'm not ready to talk about it" I told her.
"When will you be able to, another two years? Or two years after that?" She asked me
"Yeah, after 6 years" I answered seriously.
"Ok but can we at least take a few steps to get there?" She asked "Like taking your wedding ring off?" Alison took my hand and took the ring off. I stared at my hand. It felt weird, like I just lost a part of me.
"Also maybe dating?" Alison offered.
"Oh I don't know Ali" we walked inside.
"Come on, there has to be at least one girl in the town that you like, just a little bit" I saw the old Alison come out of her. I thought about it for a second.
"Jason, I have to go out tonight, and I'm sorry to leave you, but maybe, you can find someone you go out with too?" Alison smiled and went to the store. I went in the kitchen and cleaned up breakfast. I was think about what Ali said and I stared at my hand, for it felt bare and a lone. I picked up my phone and dialed the number.
"Hello" I heard over the phone
"Hi, is this Mona Vanderwal" I asked into the phone as I considered just hanging up.
"Yes, who is this?" She asked all professionals.
"This is Jason Dilaurentis" I told her.
"Oh hi Jason! How are you?!" She asked with a happy and fun tone.
"I'm good, I was just calling to see if you would like to go out somewhere tonight?" I asked her. She was silent for a minute. But it wasn't an awkward silence.
"Yes, that sounds great" she answered and I heard happiness in her voice.
"Ok, I'll pick you up at 8:00pm" I told her
"Perfect, see you then" she answered
"See you then" I smiled to myself. Then I hung up the phone. I took a deep breath and called Kota's mom. This is going to be an awkward conversation.
"Hello Jason, how are you?" She asked
"I'm ok, how are you?" I asked
"I'm ok too" she sighed
"I don't want this to be awkward but I kind of need you to watch the girls tonight" I asked her
"Oh sure honey, is Ali going out?" She asked me
"Yeah she's been seeing this guy for a few months now" I answered
"Oh good for her! What are you going tonight dear" she asked me
"I have a date" I answered softly. It was silent for a second or two.
"Oh well that's good, right, moving on is good" she sounded sad but happy for me.
"Yeah, uh so I'm leaving at 8:00pm" I told her.
"Ok honey, I'll see you then" she then hung up the phone. Just then Ali returned home.
"Hey, so I'm going out tonight" I told Alison and smile came across her face.
"Really! That's great, who? do I get to meet her yet?" She asked excitedly.
"You kind of already know her" i said an she gave me a confused looked.
"It's Mona" I told her.
"Vanderwal?" She asked.
"Yeah"
"Really, huh, that actually might be a cute couple" Alison smiled then hugged me.
"Well have fun" she went upstairs.1:30pm
I went to the girls school to pick up Gracie. She was in he principals office for god knows what. Lucy is taking the bus home. I walk up the walk way to the school.
I walk into the school and went into the principals office where I saw the Mr. Margot the principal and mrs. Bledel Gracie's teacher. I went and sat down after they greeted me.
"So Mr. Dilaurentis, your daughter has welcomed herself to entering her teachers computer and took the answer keys for herself." Mr. Margot told me and I sighed and Gracie sunk in her seat.
"We called you in here to talk about a suitable punishment for grace" mrs. Bledel told me nastily.
"Grace please exit the room" the principal said and she left the room. Why did she leave me, she knows they scare me!
"Why does Gracie thinks she is entitled to enter my computer!?" Bledel yelled at me.
"I don't think she thinks she is entitled, I think she thinks, hey my teacher won't teach me anything so I gotta find the answers somewhere" I answered her.
"How are you and your wife parenting her!" Bledel yelled at me. And I stood up from the chair and went up real close to her.
"You wanna know how she's parented, I'll tell you, my sister and I raised her well to be a decent person and her sister too. She had trouble in school a lot so we try and help her but you give her these damn homework assignments that are useless and will have no affect what so ever when she grows up!'I pushed and she had wide eyes and so did the principal. 'Where is the lesson on growing up and making smart choices, or the lesson on getting through stuff and dealing with problems! Oh and what about the lessons that will help them get a job, not the lesson asking how many apples are in the damn basket at the super market! Huh? Where are those lessons' I paused again, bledel was about to speak but I interrupted her. 'That kid has been through a hell of a lot, she lost her mom a few years ago, she has a lot trouble in school, oh speaking of thank you mrs bledel for that lovely email, I will have Grace tested to see if she has a learning disability, instead of maybe having you give her some extra help, because I sure as hell cant a ford a tutor!" I finished yelling at both of them. Bledel just stood there, she looked nervous and Mr. Margot took a deep breath.
"Mr. Dilaurentis, we do not know what to say" he took his glasses off
"Don't pretend to be professional here, just call me Jason, and how about you say, I'm sorry the teachers suck at this school and I'm sorry that our whole school sucks. I came to this school years ago, and guess what, they were the worst years of my life! Gracie is done at this school, she's going to private school and I don't care how broke I will be, I don't want her childhood to be miserable like mine was" I yelled at them and walked out and slammed the door behind me. I walked to where Gracie was sitting.
"Come on, we are leaving" I said and she tried to keep up with my swift pace.
"Are you mad at me?" She asked
"Well I'm not thrilled, but I'm not mad at you"
"Then who are you mad at?" She asked
"Your school, you aren't going there anymore, I'm putting you in private school" I told her and she cheered and we got in the car.
We got home and she started going upstairs.
"Where are you going?" I asked her
"Homework" she answered. I shook my head
"I was serious, you aren't going back to that school, not even tomorrow, go watch your aunt cook or something, you'll learn more" I told her and she ran to Alison.I got ready to go on my date. Carrie arrived and was sitting with Lucy, coloring. I left the house to get Mona.
Hours later
I went home from the date late, Mona and I kind of lost track of time. We had fun, we talked and caught up with each other. We got ice cream after dinner which I never do without Gracie or Lucy, I brought some home for them though. I walked in the house and tried to be quiet.
"Dad" I heard grace call. Carrie must have fallen asleep on the couch. I walked over to Gracie who was on the couch.
"Hey, what are you still doing up?" I asked and laid next to her on the couch.
"I wanted to know how your date went" she smiled a little at me.
"It went well, here I brought you home ice cream" I handed her the dessert. She grabbed it and began eating it.
"Dad is Alison leaving?" She asked me
"No why would you ask that?" I was confused
"Because she's always with that guy and she said they are getting serious, the other day he was here and a picture of a ring fell from his pocket" she answered
"Oh well, I don't know, she won't leave anytime soon though" I answered her and I turned the tv on while she ate the ice cream.
