Kiki screamed. It was right on top of her. The creature was horrifying. It stood on three feet, one a birds one a reptile and one a cats. One of it's feet was on her left, her right and between her legs. She couldn't move past the thing. The torso looked like a deformed blob. Its razor teeth had drool drip off of them. It's breath reminded her of a dead carcass. The eyes were slitted, pupil's red.
Kiki's eyes dotted around. There had to be something-anything- that could help her out of this hole. It was hard to even think of anything besides the monster growling in her face. In the very corner of her vision she could see it-Escape!
There was a claw, or what seemed like one, in the ground on her right. It might have been a lost relic from an old birds past. Kiki didn't honestly care at the moment.
So she stretched out her hand. The claw was just out of reach. The monster eyed the claw and her hand. It raised its reptile claw and charged. Kiki screamed in pain. Blood spouted from the wound ripped open on her arm. She recoiled. The monster roared. The movements led her to have an opening. She bolted off the path and into the overgrowth.
The only sound heard was the sound of Kiki's feet slapping against the fallen leaves. She dashed past towering trees and thorny bushes. The thorns that what laced on every flower hacked at her clothing. She stopped running when she stumbled upon a tree in the middle of a clearing. Kiki thought it was strange that there was a single tree in what looked like a freshly cut meadow.
But Kiki was exhausted and didn't have the energy to ponder on at the moment were trivial things. She collapsed against the trunk that even ten people couldn't wrap their arms around. She smelled something tasty. Her breath caught back to her. Her arms drooped, her eyelids slid.
Oh what she'd give to be home! She glanced around. Everything outside of the small clearing was ablaze with dark plants. Every place looked the same. Where did she even come from? How was she supposed to go home? In the corner of her eye she saw movement.
The creature's teeth were red and it was holding something which resembled a head. Kiki sprung up, but her feet were caught in the root of the tree and the ground welcomed her. She twisted around just enough to see the thing looming above her. What smelled so good?
"You have walked upon hellish ground child. Every human who have trekked through this forest has never come out." Its voice was strong and dark yet feminine. It curled around Kiki's ears. Its voice said few, but it made Kiki regret everything. Kiki started to tremble.
"I-I didn't mean to. I swear!"
She whined. She wanted to go home. Back to where Mother was. Her sweet lullabies, her warm milk on harsh winters. Her smile..... She had the most contagious smile.....
It was then, that Kiki started to cry. Small crystals paraded down her cheeks. Slowly, her tears became waterfalls. Her face scrunched as she let out the whines she'd held back this whole time. Kiki's vision was blurred to the point of blindness. The creature cocked its head, as if confused. Its already slitted eyes squinted more. Had it never seen anyone cry?
Unknown to Kiki, the creature did know what it felt to cry. It had seen it happen before, with the same little girl...
But still the thing carried on. It placed its retiple part onto where Kiki's arm met her shoulder. The shirt she had been wearing was ripped ages ago, her shoulder was bare. Kiki could feel the rough skin of the creature grind against her skin.
The creature dug into the skin. A small tear appeared, getting longer and bloodier by the minute. The pain was bearable, considering what else she had been through. The tear tore down all the way to her wrist, painstakingly slow.
Kiki didn't dare move. Perhaps that is all it will do? The claw seized its movements. Kiki didn't budge. She knew it was going to continue her suffering. Do all monsters toy with their food?
Kiki braced herself for the attack, eyes glued shut.
It never came.
Kiki cracked open an eye. What was once a hideous beast, one that had teeth sharper than knives, that outran her so quickly that gave her a broken soul...
Was now a beauty.
Long flowing hair, eyes like a doe's. Skin that shone like a summer beach. The now soft hands touched Kiki's face lovingly. The touch was so familiar and almost made Kiki's experience melt away.
"M-mama?" She sputtered. What.....how... The young girl was hushed by her mother's slender finger. The woman gave off a lovely smile that calmed her. That smell came back. It was stronger than ever.
Mama sat up and straightened. "If you're quiet dear, I tell you what you are."
Her soothing voice made Kiki unable to not obey. She nodded dumbly. Mother continued.
"You are a creature of the dark, called a blightling. We have two forms which we get when we become of age. We feed on the bodies of the ones who tread through our territory. You've been too young to truly embrace yourself.
" I allowed you to live outside our territory so you'd be drawn in. I needed you to have the desire to go in and eat some. I'm sorry I scared you so much. I couldn't just not tease you a little." Mother giggled, Kiki smiled a bit. "But today is the day you come of age. Speaking of that, it's time for you to have your very first meal."
Mother reached behind her back. Slowly she pulled out a leg.
A human leg.
Kiki should have been scared. she should have asked her mother where she got it and why she says "first meal". She should have ran.
She should have not wanted so dearly to rip it out of her mother's hand and devour it.
But she did.
As the meat went down her throat, Kiki felt stronger, Lighter. Her clothes ripped off. A third limb stretched out her behind.
Once she was done, she looked just like the monster that had once attacked her. And she knew that she would never leave the forest again. Her mother changed into her own form. Their true forms.
