My mother had always told me about these strange things that would happen to her and how it all had lead back to her eighteenth birthday.
Holy shit. I have been so distracted lately I almost completely forgot about my own eighteenth birthday coming up soon. I try to think back to what my mum used to tell me about her unnatural.. almost superhuman "powers".
I never really believed her until I started to have these extremely large mood swings and started having problems that I have never had before. Before now I used to be very positive and carefree, now I can barley even look at a person without shutting down.
It's now 3 am and i'm still walking around trying to clear my head until a noise snaps me out of my thoughts. I turn around the corner to see a girl, she looks around my age but thats just from the back. Who the hell would be out at 3 in the morning anyway? Oh thats right, me. This mystery girl intrigues me and surprisingly hasn't noticed my presence yet.
Not paying attention to the sidewalk in front of me, i tripped over a piece of rubble and stumbled over.
"Shit!" I mumbled to myself looking up right after to see the face of the girl i've been mesmerized by. Her face was young but not any younger then me. She had blazing blue eyes that you could see from miles away. Black makeup ran down her face and her blonde hair seemed to be a bit messy yet still very maintained.
Worry and fright flashed across her face right before she started to walk away at a faster pace.
"Wait!" I say having no control of my mouth.
She looks at me and i could see shes having a war in her mind deciding on wether to trust me or not.
The girl hesitates at first but then slowly turns around and walked towards me cautiously.
"Why are you out here so late?" I ask the now more innocent looking mystery girl.
"I think I could ask you the same." She replies sharply yet calm. The girl sits down on the tiny bench and scoots over some then looks at me. "Well, are you going to sit or not?" She asks impatiently with almost a smirk on her face.
"Uh-h yeah." I stutter slightly embarrassed.
The girl pulls out a cigarette box and a lighter. "Want one?" She offers, pointing the box towards me. I have never actually tried a cigarette before, whats the worst it can do?
"Yeah sure." I say trying to hide the reluctancy in my voice. After lighting her own she passes me one and lights it. A giant puff of smoke pours through my lungs and throat and i start choking. Mystery girl starts laughing and then blows out a perfect smoke ring. This was a bad idea.
"So," She starts off "I'm Aubrey" she says with a smile and reaches out to shake my hand.
"Harry." I choke still trying to catch my breath, shaking her quite small hand compared to mine.
I throw the almost full cigarette on the ground and step on it so the burnt end is out trying to not make it too noticeable. Aubrey seems to not think much of the action and does the same herself. Lesson well learned, never smoking again.
An eerie silence arises and the air becomes noticeably thicker.
"You're one of them aren't you Harry?" Aubrey asks me in a completely serious tone and it caught me off guard.
One of ..them?
Who are they and why would I be one of them?
What am I...?
