[the image above is a fairly accurate depiction of Mer]
Edina wrapped her pale arms around my waist from behind me, but it didn't feel the same as when Dad hugged me. I dropped my cleaning supplies onto the floor and turned around to give my girlfriend a peck on the lips. It was a friendly gesture at that point because everything felt more and more boring between us as time continued.
Sure, dating a rich white girl was pretty fun, but we had been best friends for years before we became a thing, and it felt like we just continued being best friends. When she asked me out last year, I said yes because I was desperate to fit in with the crowd.
South Carolina wasn't a good place to hold hands with a girl and kiss her in public, but dating someone was better than dating no one. I got attention, both positive and violently negative, from dating Edina. Attention was the end goal, really. Our parents were chill with it too, so I didn't see why not.
"How'd you get in here? Did you pay at the gate?" I asked, chuckling as she let go. Her blue eyes stared down at me because she was a couple of inches taller than I was. Although she was blonde and skinny, she was known for being a rule breaker and kind of a rebel. Her clothes were all still average, and her makeup followed the trend, but she'd always get in trouble at school and cheat in sports. I half expected her to jump the fence to get into the zoo.
She rubbed her nape, looking down at the ground beside me. "I jumped the fence," I fucking knew it, "It's not a big deal though, right?" Her voice was always soft and sweet, like pouring water into a cup, but sometimes she got loud and obnoxious. Either way, it was hard to be mad at her. Her plump, puckered lips were irresistible, and her teary eyes could melt the coldest of hearts.
I shrugged. "I guess it's fine, but I'm not sure it's a good thing that you're distracting me." Playing the negative Nancy was usually my role in the relationship. I tried being responsible, but it didn't make her happy.
"Oh, I'm distracting you?" she asked, stepping forward and smirking. She slightly reached out, my hands slipping into hers, and she pressed her forehead against mine. "I'll show you distracting."
My eyes widened as she leaned forward, and I quickly stepped back, stumbling over my cleaning supplies. I even fell down, grunting as I landed on a few bottles of soap. She giggled, watching me struggle to get back up, and, eventually, she reached out to help me up. Because of my small size and weight, Edina easily yanked me up. "Please just chillax if you're gonna be annoying me during work hours," I said.
She scoffed and helped me pick up my cleaning supplies. "Annoying you? Please, I'm spicing up your evening. Would you rather be thinking about the French final?" she asked. I immediately thought of Mer.
"Maybe. Grades are important," I replied. We gathered my things and ventured on to the jellyfish exhibit, where I was headed before Edina interrupted. She had a point about relaxing. I should be happy to see her, especially since I've been practicing speaking French to the animals for a week now, but I have too much to think about. I'd even say that working at the zoo eases my anxiety about school and money.
We dragged the bottles, gloves, buckets, and mops down the halls of the "employee's only" hallways. They snaked through the zoo, behind exhibits and fish tanks and cages. Compared to the guest hallways, they were musky and humid. Edina hated it, and she always dramatically gasped for air whenever we got out, but I was used to it.
When we reached the jellyfish area, which was completely black with little to no light (even for the guests, just so they could see the jellyfish glow), I put down the supplies into one pile. Edina scurried up to the tank of jellyfish to our right, and she leaned down to see a big one near the bottom. I know it's dumb, but I couldn't help staring at her ass when she leaned down like that. She's hot; what can I say?
