Basics
No guns, cars, tattoos, etc., this is supposed to take place in what was older times, though we don't mind if the dresses used are more modern.
Story
Everyone is born with wings, and your wings dictate your class. Usually, people are born into a class, and it's pretty hard to move from class to class. Once a year, if there is anyone that has moved from class to class, there is a ceremony in their honor, in which people of classes are invited. At the end of the ceremony large numbers of enchanters and enchantress' come out, making a circle around the people(s) that have changed classes. No one really knows how it works, but anyone who has been there can attest that there is usually a large amount of screaming as the enchanters remove the wings and proceed to grant the person(s) wings of the next class. These people tend to be in pain for days on end, but everyone thinks the symbol of status is worth it.
When a spouse is chosen for the prince(s) the same ceremony is held, though it is generally private, containing only family members and close friends, as well as castle workers, and since old law dictates that the attempted conception of a child must happen on the night of the wedding, it isn't hard to say that the bride is usually in pain for a week or so following the ceremony.
No exceptions are made, ever, but again, the promotion to royalty is something people will go through pain to get, and now it is your chance to become a princess, and possibly the next queen.
