The Start

"I really want you to meet him." Tiara said. "He's everything to me." I looked at my phone with doubt written all across my face. Every guy she's ever been with has been her everything. "I'm in my pajama shorts and a ratty t-shirt. Can't I look a little better?" I ask. As soon as I asked her this I knew it was a mistake. Tiara hated when someone was better than her. She always had to be prettier than me, her hair had to be just a shade lighter than mine, and I could never out dress her. Add this all together and put her new boyfriend in the mix- I just asked the worst question. "Bri, he isn't going to care how you look. He is my boyfriend." She told me coldly. I didn't answer her right away; I knew I had made her mad enough so at this point the best thing would be was to give in. "Bring him by. I don't care, T." I tell her. She squeals in excitement and tells me they'll be over in twenty minutes. I threw my phone down in frustration. Tiara, yet again, is getting what she wants. I love her to death, but sometimes I wish she wasn't so selfish. I try to fix myself up enough so that I don't look like a homeless bum when I meet him. I throw on some cut offs and my Atlantic Beach hoodie and throw my hair into a quick messy bun.

I hear her truck pull in quickly. She slams her door with a laugh, and she climbs the stairs to my front porch. As I open the door, Tiara runs past me, and the only thing I hear is "I have to pee!" While she's in there, I take the time to look at who's in the truck. He's looking down at his phone, so he doesn't see me looking. Tiara has always been attracted to athletes, and he is no exception. He looks up at me, and then I can really see his face. He has brown eyes, and a small smile on his face. This guy is gorgeous. "Bri where are you?" I hear Tiara call. "In the living room." I say as I look away from her boyfriend. She comes up behind me and looks out at him. "What do you think?" She asks me. If I tell her what I was really thinking, she'd kill me. "He looks nice." I say. "He's amazing!" She gushes. "Can I get his name?" I ask jokingly. "His name is Kile." The first thought I had was that his name fits him, and the next minute I was wishing I could go talk to him. "Kile come meet Bri." She yells to the truck. He steps out of the truck without a smile. He's even cuter when I can fully see him with his dark skin glowing in the sun. "Hey I'm Kile." He says. "Hi, I'm Brianna but everyone calls me Bri." I reply.

As sad as it sounds, the whole time I was looking at Kile, my only thought was how bad Tiara was for him. My best friend was rude, and she tended to treat all her "lovers" with disrespect. She was the one who had to be first. If any of her boyfriends tried to talk to another female, Tiara would snap. She didn't like competition in any kind of way.  "It's nice to meet you Brianna." Kile says. I can't believe that he actually called me by my full name, and I don't even want to see Tiara's face. Nobody says anything for a few seconds, and Tiara is the first one to break the silence. "Well Kile and I have to get going. Bri, I'll text you." She tells me with a wink. I take one more look at Kile and smile at him. I wave at Tiara as she pulls out and quietly return to my room.  One thing I know for sure, Tiara is completely wrong for Kile. She wasn't going to treat him like she was supposed to, and I could already see the beginning of the end.

Two Months Later:

"Have you and Kile talked today?" I ask Tiara. I already knew the answer before I asked. Kile had been coming to me with all the issues between him and Tiara since they began. "No, but I'm trying to tell him that Alexander won't continue to be a problem." She answers. Alexander was her new friend who went to the same high school as her. He knew about her and Kile, but he didn't seem to care. "How's it been going?" I asked again. She looks out the window of her bedroom and doesn't say anything for awhile. "He doesn't trust me. I'm kept in the dark about what he does, and when he does it. It's like I've lost him but he's still there." Tiara tells me. I knew how Kile was feeling about her, and it was completely different from her. He didn't trust her at all, and he was trying to find a way to end things in a way that wouldn't hurt her. Tiara's phone lit up and before she could cover it, I saw Alexander's name pop up. "Tiara I thought you were cutting him off!" I say in exasperation.

I didn't want her and Kile to work things out if she was just going to ruin her chances with him. "It's not even like that. I've told him that I was serious about Kile, and he knows I pretty much have a boyfriend." She explains. I wanted to smack my best friend. She knew that if Kile found out that she still talked to Alexander, Kile would end things. Alexander didn't care that she "basically had a boyfriend" because he got Tiara to kiss him during a game of truth or dare. He knows she'll do whatever so that's what he relies on. "I still don't think Kile would want you talking to him dude." I say. I'm trying so hard to get her to understand, but it's not working. Tiara doesn't see an issue with her having Alexander in her life. Her phone rings again, and this time it's Alexander calling her. "Hey Xander!" She gushes into the phone. I roll my eyes at her, and she flips me off. I step out of her room and walk to the kitchen.

I've known Tiara for most of our lives, and she's always been like this. But this time, it's unbearable. Kile is an amazing guy, and she's throwing him away for a new toy to play with. My phone buzzes, and I look down to see Kile's name lighting up my phone. He wants to meet up with Tiara and I later, but she'll come up with some excuse as to why I can't come. I'm not allowed to see Kile often, but when I do, feelings from the first day I met him always seem to surface. I'm playing a dangerous game with Tiara, but Kile deserves better than her. "Bri Bri!" She calls out. Tiara only calls me Bri Bri when she wants something, so I'm wary to answer her. "I'm in the kitchen." I say. I grab a soda out of her fridge to make it look I was doing more than just hiding, and she comes in as soon as I shut the door.

"Kile wants to see us." She says with a smile. Her smile is contagious. "Well are we going to see him?" I ask. I'm bracing for a quick no to come out of her mouth, but she slowly agrees. I turn to face her to see why she hesitated, but when I see the phone in her hand, I understand. Alexander took her attention once again.
