Chapter One – Jane
It was one of the worst storms Chicago had had in years. I was working in the office after hours, like usual. There was a big board meeting tomorrow. If I had a good presentation there would be a nice bonus and promotion waiting for me.
Working for Bliss, a magazine company, was something I had dreamed of doing my whole life. I completed college, got my bachelors degree in journalism, married, and had a beautiful daughter. My life couldn’t be any better. I was very proud of what I had accomplished in my 35 years. Growing up in a foster home, I believe, is why I work so hard. I wanted to make sure that I could raise a successful family, even though I grew up without one.
The rain hit the glass walls of my office hard, sounding more like rocks than small rain droplets. A bright light filled the room for a split second, followed by a crack and boom that made me jump.
I shook off the sudden jolt and began working on my presentation, again.
I bet you are loving this Grace. I thought while typing on my computer. My daughter, Grace, absolutely loves thunderstorms. The bright lights and loud noises that would scare your typical 8 year old just fascinated my Grace.
I was sure Bryce, Grace’s babysitter, was about to pull her hair out from Grace going on and on about the beauty of thunderstorms.
I came out of my deep thought when my cell phone started to buzz in my purse.
“This is Jane Russ what can I do for you?” I asked, not recognizing the number.
“Mrs. Russ this is Officer Kurt. I am afraid I have some terrible news. There has been an accident.”
Little did I know that this call would change my life forever.
2 Years Later
“Jane. Jane.”
“Huh!” I jolted up from the chair I had fallen asleep in.
I took in my surroundings. White walls, white tiled floors, and tacky blue waiting chairs. I was in the hospital’s waiting room. A room that I had been getting quite familiar with in the past 2 years.
I looked up at my best friend, Anne, who had woken me up. She was such a beautiful young woman, but today she had bags under her brown eyes. Her usual long, dark hair that was always perfectly straight was now in a messy bun on her head. I probably looked worse with my greasy black hair in a ponytail and my make-up free face. I couldn’t remember the last time I had a chance to shower, or get my 8 hours of sleep.
“Hey, she just woke up. I know you really needed to catch up on some sleep, but I knew you would want to talk to her,” Anne said.
“Did she just get up?” I asked Anne as I lifted myself out of the chair.
