Soundtrack: "Beautiful Thing" by Grace Vanderwaal
"You're a beautiful thing
We're a beautiful thing together
Even when the weather is low
You're a beautiful thing
We're a beautiful thing together
Even when the weather is low
We can find the rainbow
Up in the sky
You'd say 'don't you cry, it's all gonna be alright'"
....................."Is he breathing?" Maggie half-shouts at a dark-haired woman, walking in from the reception area with her. The woman clutches an infant. "Okay. Okay, you need to take a deep breath."
Will looks concernedly over at the two and instantly recognizes the woman Maggie's assisting- it's Natalie. He drops his tablet on the counter, thanks his lucky stars the ER isn't busy, and sprints over to the pair.
"Will," Maggie says as she sees him approaching. "Will, Owen, he-" She chokes up, realizing that she has to say it out loud. "Owen hit his head and he can't breathe."
Natalie looks up at him, her brown eyes swimming with sorrow. The maroon ER doctor's attire doesn't sit on her small frame today- she'd taken the day off.
Will nods once, carefully picks up the barely-breathing infant, and rushes him to Trauma Three.
"April!" He yells as he passes her. "Need some help!"
The two hurry to intubate the tiny child, the skilled April at once successful in doing so.
"Pulse is barely there," Will barks out, his wild eyes racing from screen to screen, hoping something good will come from this, hoping to be able to give Natalie some consolation. "Push forty milligrams gentamicin, five of Benadryl."
April hurriedly fills an IV with both as Will hooks an IV attachment to little Owen's arm. It takes him a few tries to find the vein, but he emerges victorious and April hangs the IV drip from a bed post. Slowly Owen's pulse raises, but the infant never opens his eyes.
"Good work. Let's check out his cranial blunt force trauma."
Three hours later, April throws away her gloves and Will sighs contentedly as Owen's life is out of danger. Will throws open the door, searching for those eyes.
He finds them crying and red.
Natalie throws her arms around his neck, gray sweater sleeves wet with tears. "Is he okay?"
Will steps back from her loosening embrace. "He'll be fine. Small concussion, stable pulse." He offers a small smile, and receives a watery, faltering one in return.
"Did I ever tell you that you're the best?" She reaches in and kisses him on the cheek, laughing as his cheeks blush a furious red.
