At the Crossroads

In my mind I saw past memories of my family, good memories that you would look back on in bad times. There was one of me and my parents going to the beach for vacation, I was scaring them when I found a horseshoe crab and showed it to them. Another memory came and it was us watching the stars at night from a hill at some park. A third memory flashed of them taking me to an amusement park with my best friend next to me. More and more memories flashed I my head until the final memory. The last memory to flash was my mom above me when I was lying on the bed. The room was decorated with christmas lights and ornaments. The window shades were open to reveal freshly fallen snow. My mom starts to move me gently "wake up, its christmas" then more violently "wake up!"

I jolt awake, my head against the window sill of a car. The stores and lights fly past. As I lean up I'm rocked around from the car hitting a speed bump. I look around to find im in a police car. The black cage that separated the criminal from the cop's was in front of me. I groaned a bit as I sat up fully. I looked down at my leg and saw that it was bandaged up, rather crudely. I heard a fist pounding on the metal grate and looked up. It was the driver's fist "wake up sleeping beauty" before he started to crackle with laughter. Next to him was another cop who hit his partner on the arm "Dude quit it! Do you have any idea who that guy is?". The cop in the passenger seat looked scared, he should be... "all I know is this guy caused the entire police force a headache organizing this whole thing." replied the driver. He then looked back at me for a second and then faced front. "I'll show you how much I'm not scared of him". It started to rain as we pulled into the station. The driver opened up the door that was nearest me and dragged me out of the car by the handcuffs. "Move" he said as I got to my feet. He led me to a metal door and inside the building. Right beyond that door were the holding cells for criminals, all of which were empty. They open up one of the cells and motion for me to go in. As I entered, the driving cop kicked me in the back of the knee, causing me to kneel down. He then kicked me in the back, launching me into the cell.

"Matt stop it!" Cried the younger cop. Matt, the cop that kicked me, turned to his partner "remeber David...the only reason your here is because me, now be quiet!". Seeing an opportunity I coughed and said "police brutality, in the flesh". Matt turns to me as I get up "what did you say to me?" He asked rather angrily. Facing him I said loud and clearly "I said Police Brulatity!" I yelled. Hopefully he had taken the bait. He walks into the cell and closes it behind him. "If you think you can complain about police brutality..." he suddenly throws a powerful right hook at me, knocking me into the back wall. A small cut was there from the ring on his hand. He walks over and drills my mid section with punches and elbows me in the gut before David cries out "Stop Matt!". Matt looks back at his partner as I slump to the floor on my side. He looks down at me and kicks me in the gut at least three times before saying "Watch your mouth next time or" he drives his foot onto my wound from the shot, I screamed in agony as he pressed down harder and harder "you might find yourself somewhere you dont like". He lifts his foot and walks out of the cell, with his partner holding the door. The last thing I saw was David looking at me concerned before leaving the room. Then I passed out from the pain.

The next thing I remember was waking up in a metal chair, without the handcuffs around my wrists. In front of me was a metal table with a lamp hanging above it. A mirror type of glass in front of me also on the wall. It was obviously an interrogation room, but was it still in the police building? It looked different then the rest of the building I saw. Before i could figure it out, the police commissioner I saw earlier stepped out from behind me. He dropped a folder in front of me with my name and picture if when I was younger. He then went over to the wall and leaned against it. In the faint light of the lamp I saw he had a few scars on his hands and face from possibly his time in the field.

"You sure have been around, haven't you?" He said to me quietly, he was looking at the floor so that dampened his voice a bit. Chuckling a bit, I replied "yeah I have. And might I say that the hospitality here isn't that great. 2 stars.". He simply sighed and walked into the light, resting his hands on the cold metal table. "You do know we have enough evidence to enforce the death sentence here right? 104 counts of Robbery, 387 counts of murder, 5 of which were officers, and countless cases of tampering with evidence, illegal weapon possession, and fraud." He took off his glasses and looked up at me, smiling "But it doesn't have to be the end of your story just yet".

Unsure of what he meant, I stood up and set my hands on the table as well, looking him in the eyes "what do you mean?". He smiled at me "What I mean is why dont you work for us? You have more training and skill then anyone I have ever known or worked with. You put even the veterans of the force, the guys who were here the longest to shame. So im offering a choice. You can either die a criminal, or live as a hero.". I was taken aback, me a cop? Why? I killed so many and he just flat out offered me a chance to redeem myself. "What would I be doing exactly?" I said. "You will hunt down dangerous criminals, eliminate them, and report back to me. All crimes commitied in the past lifted. And you could have your old life back, you can still save yourself. I'll let you think about it...". The commissioner stood up and motioned to the windows, summoning two cops into the room. They put the handcuffs back on me and escorted me back to the cell where I was originally placed.
