We board the train, and I just notice that Rue has been crying. You couldn't tell while we were moving, but you can tell now. We don't speak, until our escorts and mentors enter.
Christen and and a woman enter, along with two District 11 victors, a man named Chaff and a woman named Cedar.
Chaff sits across from me, while Cedar sits across from Rue, and our escorts sit next to both us.
"Congratulations.... Thresh. And.... Rue." He says sarcastically.
"Manners!" Lichenlie, my escort, scolds him. I believe I saw her on the stage as well. "They should be honored to represent district 11." She leans forward, whispering loudly to us, "Excuse him."
I stay still, while Rue grabs a roll off the table and starts eating it with eager fingers. The bread is nothing like the bread we had before the reaping. It's fine white Capitol bread. I've never had it before, but I hold back.
"It's good." She says. Her crying has stopped. I look at her and smile inside, but I suspect it doesn't show.
"Your a picker girl, aren't you?" I ask her, my voice deep and straightforward. I can tell I've surprised our escorts. With their squeaky voices, I must sound like a monster.
"Yes," she replies. "I'm the one who whistles at the end of a work day."
"I hear you." I say."You do what, honey?" Cedar asks.
"I whistle to the mockingjays at the end of the day, a special little tune, to signal for everyone to knock off." Rue explains to Cedar.
"So, aren't you supposed to help us?" I mutter to Chaff.
"Well," he says gruffly, taking a swig of some sort of alcohol, "I could help you, if you were re-spect-full." He says, laughing.
I don't find it funny. I stand up, thrusting myself out of the plush chair I rested in and exit the car. I find myself in the bar car, and I walk to the bar tender. "Where's my room?" I ask him.
"Three cars down, honey." The man says. He flips his Hair to the other side. I'm exiting the car when he begins to ask, "would you like a drink?"
After I pass what looks like a dining car and more sitting rooms, I find my room.
There is a massive bed, even for me, with two side tables with a high tech looking remote for something, accompanied by a large bathroom with endless buttons on the shower, with what looks like a hundred products for the hair I don't have.
I curiously tap a metal box, and it seem to jerk awake, reading 3:48 in glowing white numbers. I sit down, and the bed cradles my body, just like that plush white couch did.
I walk to the other side of my room, where I see foggy glass covering some sort of hole in the wall. My elbow rests on the wall and an endless menu of food appears.
I order a loaf of bread and cinnamon and eat it quietly. It's one of the best things I've ever tasted.
Soon, night approaches and I change into the clothes that have been laid out for me and climb into bed. My heart beating anxiously, I somehow fall asleep.----------------------------------------------
The next morning, I eat the biggest meal I have ever seen. Oatmeal topped with varieties of fruits and a sweet, thick sauce that could only be syrup.
Fine Capitol bread with abstract jellies and jams, with different cups of liquid, varying in color and texture.
"Are you ready for the Capitol?" Lichenlie squeaks. She has pure white skin, probably powdered with some unknown paint. She dresses in a lime green dress, her hair matching her clothes.
Rue smiles at me. "It's good, huh?" She says sweetly. I do my best to smile back. "Very good." I reply. In an hour or so we arrive at the Capitol. As we enter, Rue presses her face to the train's window and looks in awe at the city.
Buildings and roads tower over us, shiny and silver. I don't mention that it's the most amazing thing I've ever seen.
"Woah?" Rue breaths in disbelief. She looks back at me. "Isn't that amazing?" She exclaims. I nod.
A building splits in half and seems to swallow us in. We are locked in darkness then pulled into the train station.
