Fire

Me and Akame decided to stop off in an inn I know to wait for nightfall. The manager shoots us a quick look then pretends we never arrived. As always, quiet and efficient. He's not cheap though. Before the mission I decide to get some rest in the double bed that takes up most of the room. The furry covers are soft against my flesh, Akame starts to clean her sword as I drift off to sleep.

"Something is coming. And you should be ready." A gruff and twisted voice growls, I am alone. The ground is burnt and the sky is black. Bodies litter the ground around me, Sheele, Tatsumi, Lubbock, Najenda, Bulat, Mine. Everyone is dead, Akame stands over their bodies half her face scarred with burns. "You didn't save them. Why didn't you save them?" She starts to cry and a puddle of emotion forms inside my mind. "Hello Y/N" A voice cackles, a form starts to materialise in front of me, dark wisps of smoke drift into the open air. The dark form slowly walks towards me, white eyes set deep inside its skull. The shape is constantly changing but seems to keep a humanoid base. "You are indeed interesting. I can see why he gave his trust to you. But that will hardly matter. Expect a champion of mine soon. You will not get your hands on that artefact. See you soon." As the form speaks smoke flows from its mouth clouding the nearby area, then it disappears. The world is engulfed in flame and Akame's screams ring through my ears. She is burning, in so much pain. "Akame" I gulp "Akame!" She coughs up smoke as the flame devours her "Akame!" I scream running towards her across hot coals, my feet bare and burning. "Akame." I hold her burnt corpse in my arms, her red eyes gone. Empty sockets are all that remain, her charred corpse stinking of burning flesh. "No, no. This can't happen. I won't allow it."

I wake up panting, my body feels as if it's on fire and my head is aching. My heart pumps at a dangerously high rate. Beside me Akame sits open eyed, I hug her. I don't know why it- it just seems right. Soon she wraps her arms around me, "What did you see?" She whispers in my ear. "E-everyone is going to d-die. I saw it. We will be receiving company soon." I sob into her shoulder. This future must be stopped, the Eternal must be defeated at all costs. "Well we're not all dead. I'm here." She holds my head in her hands and looks me in the eyes as she tells me everything is going to be okay. I don't believe her no matter how badly I want to. We both blush pink in unison. "Should we get going?" I ask, moving backwards from her grasp. She pulls me in again and kisses me, I push her back. "W-w-what?" Is all I say while grabbing Kagami and leaving her alone sitting on the bed.

I need some time to think. I tell myself as I march towards where Esdeath lives. All I have to do is take the Shard of Nakkaka and avoid Akame for the rest of my life. Fuck I feel like shit, she even made the first move. But with all that's going on I don't know if I'm ready, have I ever been ready for anything. Thrust into a life on the run at a young age. Maybe I've never been ready. I sigh and leap up onto Esdeath's balcony.

Where to start? I ask myself walking through the double doors into her room. The familiar bed stands to one side and her smell clouds the room. She's here. This wasn't expected, I thought she was off fighting somewhere. Movement can be heard from the bathroom, good she likes to take a while with her baths. Searching the room I find a distinct lack of any artefacts, all I can find is a painting of her with me. I snort at the picture then head out onto the balcony. "Y/N?" Her voice lays claim to my ears. Do I have to turn around? Of course I do. "Hi" I rub the back of my head as I turn to face her. And of course she is wearing only a towel. "You have returned to me" She caresses my cheek with her soft thin hands.

"No. I'm still the Shard, Esdeath you know as long as you work for them it can never be." She looks to the floor with distaste. "Is that all that is preventing your return?" Esdeath looks up at me with her blue eyes, her face is stained pink by her own feelings. "Yes. You know what they did to me. They are the reason I am what I am. But I could never harm you." My hand gently strokes her hair "You taught me what I needed to start me crusade. You cared for me despite my hatred for the empire. Then when I had made my decision, you let me leave." She pulls me in for a hug an I return the contact. She is just as I remember, so cold on the outside but different. Just many don't see that side. The amount of times I've been contracted to kill her. And haven't. Emotions don't suit assassins very well. A deep rumbling resonates in the floor, my eyes widen and instinctively I push Esdeath back and perform a backflip. A tear forms in the air and black smoke pours out, a hunched creature with long claws and a flaming body claws its way out. "Y/N I'm here for you." It hisses and throws itself at me pulling us both over the balcony.

I use its body to break my fall, kicking off it I ready Kagami. "You must be the champion." I state to the monster covered in flames. "You are right. He never told me you were clever." He laughs sarcastically then summons a burning sword, he dashes towards me. "Incendia, that is my name." His sword clashes with my own spurting flame near my face. The beast retreats then launches another attack, aiming for my legs. I jump over his lunge and slash a deep cut in his chest. Fire spits from the wound and it melts closed. "What are you?" I ask blocking another attack from him. "I'm a fire imp, a lowly servant of Hell. But then the Eternal promised me great power. Now my home dimension is dead." He chuckles and claws three gashes across my face. Screaming in pain the burning sets in and my face feels as if it's on fire. The imp jumps over me and lands on the other side. Where he stood before now stands Akame. "No." I stumble to my feet and charge at the imp who dodges and slashes across my back. "No. Akame" I groan climbing back to my feet as my back burns like a thousand suns. She sprints at the imp and slashes at its head. The imp dodges and kicks her in the knee, she falls to the ground and blocks a downward chop from the creature. In rage I charge again, stabbing the imp through the back and my sword protrudes from his chest. He kicks me away from his back disarming me. Kagami sticks from his back and he slowly removed the mirror blade. Throwing it to the ground he sprints at me and stabs me through the knee, I scream in pain again. He pulls the sword out and stabs it through my chest. My eyes widen as the sword goes through my body, I can feel the fire burning me from the inside. "Please." I cough up a puddle of blood. "Leave her alone." The imp smiles and licks his lips. Akame is kicked in the chest when she attacks again, he grabs her face and the burning smell from my dream returns. Using all I have left I pull out the flaming sword, my organs spurting blood from the hole inside me. "Fuck you" My hands burning from the hilt I jam the blade inside the imp's neck, he continues to chuckle so I twist the blade removing his head. "Shit" coughing more blood I fall to the ground. My body broken and the darkness approaching fast I can feel a release coming. Perhaps death but maybe so much more.

"Did you think I wouldn't of planned for this eventuality?" I look up to see the red eyes of Zenith and his black hair drifting silently on the wind. He pulls out a needle and kneels beside me. "This may hurt just a little." He stabs me in the neck with the needle and my body convulses in pain. "Oh, and if you were paying attention. You would've seen that your old friend was wearing the shard as a necklace." Zenith throws the amulet onto my chest. The pain subsides but my vision turns blurry my chest no longer hurts and I feel different. "Like I said. I planned for this." Zenith disappears. Akame rushes to my side, her face is fine, there is no burn mark. Have I changed the future? I don't think this was the only champion any way. And I hope that the others can handle them. "Y/N!" Akame hold the side of my face with her hand, her tears drop onto my face. "You're healing. That man must've given you something."

"That was Zenith." I hold my bloody coated hand against her face, the burn marks have disappeared but the blood still covers them. Akame kisses me, I can't escape this time. Holding onto the Shard of Nakkaka I kiss back. The taste of my own blood fills both our mouths, the metallic aroma filling our noses. My vision starts to fade and I black out...

Author's Notes - Guess why the chapter is called fire. Y/N is right there are more champions to come but don't worry I've beefed you up a bit. Courtesy of Zenith Industries, I definitely knew it would work. Wasn't an experimental formulae or anything. But anyway tell me what you think. Zenith Out...
