Prologue

"You did everything you could."
She sucks her lips into her mouth. "I know."
"He's in a better place-"
"He's fucking not, okay? He's in hell-" She gets interrupted again.
"That's ridiculous. Absolutely damn ridiculous. You couldn't help him anymore, you get that?"
She got up and lit a cigarette with shaking fingers, mumbling between it.
"You can't take anything seriously. Can't you see how fucking hard this is for me? How can you just keep fucking around saying nonsense? You cynical asshole."
They were both on the verge of tears, but she didn't want to acknowledge it.
"Not hard for me?! What the actual fuck?! You didn't even know him, jesus.  Now could you please get the hell out? You're barely welcome, and smoking isn't even allowed."
She sighed deeply, rubbing her left eye tiredly, stepping on her newly lit cigarette.
"Let's both go, then."
They did go, separately, with hands in their pockets and heads bowed for the rain.
And they both finally understood that they had never known the only person they'd trusted.
